The Seeds of Death Part 1

When sabotage and murder disrupt Earth's reliance on the Travel-Mat system, Commander Radnor seeks out exiled rocket scientist Professor Eldred to restore transport to the Moon, unaware of the deadly aliens controlling Moonbase.

The episode opens with a series of malfunctions disrupting the T-Mat system, a revolutionary technology facilitating instantaneous transport across the globe. Kelly, overseeing Earth Control, struggles to maintain order as shipments are misrouted and delayed due to errors at Moonbase. Commander Radnor arrives, demanding answers and expressing concern over the system's apparent fallibility.

Meanwhile, on Moonbase, Osgood confronts Fewsham about his incompetence. An alarm signals that the outer door airlocks are in use, followed by screams. Osgood and others are attacked by unseen forces. The saboteurs, revealed as hostile aliens led by Slaar, seize control of Moonbase and coerce Fewsham into repairing the system to allow transport to Earth.

Back on Earth, the Doctor, Jamie, and Zoe materialize in a Space Museum, landing the TARDIS among exhibits of historical spacecraft. They encounter Professor Eldred, a disgruntled rocket scientist whose work was rendered obsolete by the T-Mat system. Eldred is initially hostile, guarding his private workshop with weapons, but the Doctor praises his abandoned ion rocket project.

Commander Radnor and Kelly arrive at the museum seeking Eldred's expertise to restore transport to Moonbase. They reveal that the T-Mat system at Moonbase has suffered a critical failure. Radnor asks Eldred to join, offering complete government backing to go to the moon. Eldred refuses but then Radnor receives an emergency video message from Locke on Moonbase, revealing Osgood's death and their crisis.

On Moonbase, Fewsham begins to repair the emergency T-Mat link, while Locke and Phipps attempt to send a video message to Earth. As the episode concludes, the situation remains precarious with Moonbase under alien control, the T-Mat system in chaos, and the Doctor entangled in Earth's crisis.

Act 1

The T-Mat system, Earth's primary instantaneous transport network, experiences critical malfunctions, beginning with misrouted shipments and delays attributed to incompetence at Moonbase. Kelly, overseeing Earth Control, expresses frustration over the escalating issues, particularly blaming Fewsham. Osgood, a senior controller, teleports to Moonbase with the intention of rectifying the situation. Meanwhile, Commander Radnor arrives at Earth Control, initially confident in the system's infallibility, but growing concerned as the problems persist. On Moonbase, Osgood confronts Fewsham, but their discussion is interrupted by an alarm indicating unauthorized airlock activity. Unseen forces attack Moonbase personnel, leading to screams and the death of Harvey. The saboteurs, revealed as hostile aliens led by Slaar, swiftly seize control of Moonbase. Slaar attempts to coerce Osgood into repairing the T-Mat system to facilitate alien transport to Earth. Osgood, however, deliberately sabotages the system before being killed by Slaar. Back on Earth, Kelly and Radnor receive reports of the complete power phase blank and dead primary video link from Moonbase, forcing them to acknowledge the grave and unprecedented nature of the crisis. The supposed infallibility of the T-Mat system is shattered, and Earth loses all contact with its lunar outpost, setting the stage for a desperate search for an alternative solution. The stakes rise dramatically with the confirmed alien presence and the loss of key personnel.

Act 2

The TARDIS materializes within a vast Space Museum, where the Doctor, Jamie, and Zoe discover an array of historical spacecraft exhibits, including a model ion-jet rocket. An informational video details the T-Mat system's revolutionary impact, rendering all conventional transport, including rockets, obsolete. This context immediately establishes the Doctor's group in a world reliant on the very system now in crisis. They soon encounter Professor Eldred, the museum's owner and a brilliant but embittered rocket scientist, who initially greets them with a weapon. Eldred, whose life's work was abandoned due to T-Mat's advent, expresses profound resentment towards the system. The Doctor, recognizing the advanced design of Eldred's ion rocket, engages the Professor in a detailed discussion, validating his expertise and passion, thereby subtly establishing Eldred as a potential, albeit unwilling, solution to Earth's transport problem. Concurrently, on the now alien-controlled Moonbase, Slaar coerces Fewsham into attempting repairs on the critical T-Mat emergency link to Earth. Fewsham, under duress, begins work, while Locke and Phipps, two other technicians, secretly devise a plan to repair the video communication link instead, hoping to send a distress message to Earth before the aliens can use the T-Mat to invade. This act builds the tension on Moonbase and introduces the key human element who might be able to help Earth.

Act 3

As the crisis deepens on Earth, Commander Radnor and Kelly confirm that the T-Mat system's failure is isolated to Moonbase, with Earth's end functioning normally. With no means of T-Mat transport or communication to the Moon, Radnor concludes that rockets, long considered obsolete, represent their only viable solution. He identifies Professor Eldred as the sole individual capable of controlling such a project. Radnor and Kelly proceed to the Space Museum, interrupting the Doctor's conversation with Eldred. Radnor attempts to recruit Eldred, offering full government backing for a mission to the Moon to rectify the T-Mat fault. Eldred, however, remains deeply embittered by the government's abandonment of his rocket projects in favor of T-Mat, and he vehemently refuses Radnor's proposal, citing past grievances. Simultaneously, on Moonbase, Locke and Phipps successfully repair the video link, defying Fewsham's fear of alien retribution. Locke initiates an urgent distress call to Earth. Just as Radnor presses Eldred for an approximate departure time, the emergency video message from Moonbase breaks through. Locke appears on the monitor, desperately relaying that Osgood is dead and they are in dire trouble, before the transmission abruptly cuts out, leaving Radnor, Kelly, and Eldred in shock and confirming the catastrophic nature of the situation on the Moon. This sudden, visceral evidence of the Moonbase's plight dramatically raises the stakes and underscores the immediate necessity of Eldred's expertise.
