The Hand of Fear Part 3

The Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith must stop Eldrad, a crystalline alien entity, from escaping a nuclear reactor and threatening Earth and its people.

The story begins with the Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith trying to survive an explosion at a nuclear reactor. They soon discover that the explosion was caused by an alien entity known as Eldrad, who is trying to escape the reactor. Eldrad is a powerful being capable of regenerating itself and absorbing energy. The Doctor and Sarah must find a way to stop Eldrad before it causes further destruction. Along the way, they learn more about Eldrad's backstory and its motivations. Eldrad seeks to return to its home planet, Kastria, which was destroyed in a war. The Doctor agrees to help Eldrad, but only if it agrees to do so in a way that does not harm innocent people. As they journey through time and space, they encounter various obstacles and challenges. Ultimately, the Doctor and Eldrad travel to Kastria, where Eldrad plans to reclaim its planet and rebuild its civilization.

Act 1

The narrative opens in the immediate aftermath of an "un-explosion" at the fission room, where the Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith narrowly survive a catastrophic event. They quickly discern that Eldrad, an alien entity, has absorbed the nuclear blast's energy, regenerating and gaining control over the reactor's core. This revelation establishes Eldrad as an immensely powerful and evolving threat. Professor Watson, representing conventional human authority, reacts with alarm, immediately calling for a tactical nuclear strike to neutralize the perceived danger. The Doctor, however, advocates for a diplomatic approach, recognizing Eldrad's intelligence and suggesting it might be acting out of fear, a perspective that clashes sharply with Watson's instinct for destruction. As Eldrad begins to melt its way through the reinforced door, the imminent nuclear strike forces the Doctor, Sarah, and Watson to evacuate the complex. From a safe distance, they witness the military's stand-off missiles launched at the reactor. However, Eldrad effortlessly neutralizes these "primitive missiles," absorbing their energy. This dramatic failure of Earth's most potent weaponry underscores Eldrad's invulnerability and escalates the threat beyond human capacity. The act culminates with Eldrad emerging from the core in a new, crystalline, feminine form, openly declaring its intention to reclaim Kastria, thereby transforming an unseen menace into a visible, articulate antagonist with a clear, ambitious goal. This moment firmly establishes the stakes and shifts the narrative focus from containment to a more complex engagement with Eldrad.

Act 2

Following Eldrad's dramatic emergence, the Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith confront the alien entity directly within the fission room, with Sarah asserting her right to be involved due to her discovery of Eldrad's hand. Eldrad, now fully regenerated, questions their attempts to destroy it, prompting the Doctor to explain humanity's fear-driven reactions. Eldrad demonstrates its formidable power by absorbing the missile energy and performing mind scans on the Doctor, revealing his Time Lord identity. Through this interaction, Eldrad recounts its tragic backstory: a benevolent creator on Kastria, betrayed and sentenced to obliteration after its planet became a battleground for warring alien factions. This narrative paints Eldrad not merely as a destructive force but as a victim seeking justice, complicating the Doctor's initial assessment. Eldrad demands the Doctor's help to return to Kastria's past to prevent its betrayal, a request that directly contravenes the First Law of Time. The Doctor, upholding his principles, refuses to alter history but offers a compromise: he will transport Eldrad to Kastria in the present time. Eldrad reluctantly accepts these conditions. This fragile alliance is immediately tested when Watson, re-entering the complex, attempts to shoot Eldrad. The bullets prove ineffective, and Eldrad retaliates by incapacitating Watson with its ring. The Doctor intervenes decisively, threatening to abandon Eldrad's mission if Watson is not released, forcing Eldrad to yield. This pivotal moment solidifies the Doctor's moral authority and Eldrad's grudging dependence. The act concludes with the Doctor, Sarah, and Eldrad departing the nuclear complex for the TARDIS, leaving a bewildered Watson behind, highlighting the shift from a terrestrial conflict to an interstellar journey.

Act 3

The narrative transitions to the interior of the TARDIS as Eldrad enters, initially impressed by the temporal engineering but quickly inquiring about armaments. The Doctor explains the TARDIS's unique "temporal grace," which renders weapons useless and ensures mutual safety, thereby establishing a temporary truce within its confines. Sarah questions the Doctor's decision to help Eldrad, prompting him to articulate his dual motivation: to prevent Eldrad from causing further destruction on Earth by containing its power, and his own inherent curiosity to explore Kastria. Eldrad, despite its deep-seated mistrust stemming from past betrayals, reluctantly provides the precise coordinates for its home planet. The TARDIS journey is turbulent, reflecting the immense temporal and spatial distances involved. During this voyage, the Doctor directly confronts Eldrad about its "paranoid obsession with treachery," emphasizing that cooperation is essential for any success on Kastria. He warns of dire consequences if the coordinates are incorrect, reinforcing the necessity of trust. The act culminates dramatically as the TARDIS materializes on Kastria. The viewscreen reveals a desolate, windswept planet, ravaged by solar winds, a stark contrast to Eldrad's proud descriptions of its former glory. Despite the planet's devastation, Eldrad surveys its home with unwavering resolve, reaffirming its intent to reclaim and rebuild Kastria, setting the stage for the next phase of its mission and the Doctor's involvement.
