Portmann’s Handkerchief (Bloodstained Trophy)

A bloodstained handkerchief belonging to Portmann, initially used by Dracula to discreetly wipe blood from his mouth after feeding on Agatha’s bitten lip in the Demeter’s wine cellar. Later, Dracula holds up the same handkerchief as a trophy to incriminate Agatha in the crewman’s murder, displaying its dark stains to the crew. Olgaren recognizes the item, and its presence fuels the mob’s rage, propelling Agatha toward a lynching. The handkerchief serves dual narrative purposes: first as a tool for Dracula’s deception (concealing his vampiric nature), and later as evidence in his scheme to frame Agatha.

Significance

Dracula deploys the handkerchief as staged evidence during Agatha’s trial, convincing the paranoid crew of her murderous role. Olgaren’s identification locks in its authenticity, escalating hysteria and masking Dracula’s own crimes until Agatha’s counter-accusation shifts suspicion.
