Act 1

The narrative opens with Abuela Alma recounting the origin of the Madrigal family's miracle to a young Mirabel, detailing the tragic loss of Abuelo Pedro and the magical candle's creation. This backstory establishes the family's deep connection to the miracle and their home, Casita. We then witness young Mirabel's own gift ceremony, which ends in heartbreak as her door vanishes, leaving her without a magical gift. Fifteen-year-old Mirabel, now an outsider within her extraordinary family, introduces the Madrigals and their unique powers through song, highlighting her perceived ordinariness. The story builds to the highly anticipated gift ceremony for her younger cousin, Antonio. Antonio successfully receives the gift of communicating with animals, further emphasizing Mirabel's exclusion. However, during the celebration, Mirabel observes alarming cracks spreading through Casita and the magic candle flickering, signs that the miracle is in danger. When she tries to alert her family, they dismiss her claims, unable to see the damage. Later, Mirabel overhears Abuela Alma's private fears and prayers to Abuelo Pedro, revealing that Abuela is also aware of the magic's vulnerability. This pivotal moment galvanizes Mirabel, who resolves to uncover the cause of the magic's decline and save her family's miracle, despite her lack of powers. Her first step is to seek information from her cousin Dolores, who hears everything.

Act 2

Driven by her resolve, Mirabel seeks answers, first from Dolores, who cryptically mentions Luisa's unusual anxiety and Bruno's past visions. Mirabel confronts Luisa, who, in a powerful musical number, confesses the immense pressure she endures and the toll it takes on her strength, admitting her gift is faltering. Luisa directs Mirabel to Bruno's forbidden tower, a desolate and dangerous part of Casita. Mirabel bravely navigates the treacherous, sand-filled labyrinth, eventually discovering the shattered remnants of Bruno's last vision. Assembling the glowing emerald shards, she is horrified to see an image of herself standing before a cracked Casita, seemingly responsible for its destruction. The family's anxieties about the magic intensify, culminating in a chaotic engagement dinner for Isabela and Mariano. Dolores, unable to keep the secret, blurts out the truth about Bruno's vision, leading to a public display of the family's glitching powers and a complete breakdown of the celebration. Mirabel, following rats carrying vision shards, discovers Bruno secretly living within the walls of Casita. Bruno, a timid and misunderstood figure, explains that he shattered the vision to protect Mirabel, as it showed an ambiguous future where she could either destroy or save the miracle. He reveals the key to saving the magic is for Mirabel to embrace Isabela. Mirabel confronts Isabela, and during their heated argument, Isabela reveals her deep unhappiness with the pressure of being 'perfect.' This revelation leads to Isabela's emotional breakthrough, where she embraces her true, imperfect self, creating vibrant, wild plants, and genuinely hugs Mirabel. This act of reconciliation causes the magic candle to glow brighter and the cracks in Casita to recede. However, Abuela Alma witnesses Isabela's newfound 'imperfection' and furiously blames Mirabel for all the family's troubles. Their argument escalates, with Mirabel accusing Abuela of being the one who truly breaks the family by her rigid expectations. In this moment of raw conflict, a massive crack splits Casita, the magic candle sputters and dies, and the entire house collapses, leaving the family devastated and stripped of their gifts.

Act 3

In the aftermath of Casita's collapse and the magic candle's extinction, a devastated Mirabel flees, convinced she has destroyed her family's miracle. Abuela Alma, equally broken, finds Mirabel by the very river where Abuelo Pedro sacrificed himself. In a moment of profound vulnerability, Abuela recounts her trauma and the deep-seated fear of loss that drove her to protect the miracle so rigidly, apologizing for the burden she placed on her family and Mirabel. This shared understanding leads to a heartfelt reconciliation, symbolized by the appearance of a butterfly, mirroring Bruno's vision. Soon after, Bruno, who had been hiding in the walls, emerges, ready to face the consequences, but is instead met with a tearful embrace from Abuela, signifying his long-awaited return and acceptance. The reunited family, with a newfound understanding of love and imperfection, returns to the ruins of Casita. The townspeople, witnessing their resilience and honesty, join them in a collective effort to rebuild their home, demonstrating that their community's strength extends beyond magic. During the rebuilding montage, the family members express their true selves and support each other, with Isabela cultivating diverse plants, Luisa finding balance, and Dolores and Mariano forming a connection. Antonio presents Mirabel with a new doorknob, recognizing her as the heart of the family. As Mirabel places the doorknob, a powerful surge of new magic revitalizes Casita, restoring its vibrancy and the family's gifts, but with a deeper, more authentic purpose. The cracks are not erased but redefined, embodying their journey of healing. The story concludes with the family taking a new, joyful portrait, embracing their imperfections and celebrating their true miracle: their unbreakable bond and love for one another.
