Happy Valley S01E01

A hardened but compassionate police sergeant in rural Yorkshire, still grieving her daughter's suicide, confronts a released rapist, investigates local crimes, and grapples with raising her troubled grandson while navigating personal relationships.

Sergeant Catherine Cawood, a no-nonsense police officer, responds to a call about Liam Hughes, a man threatening to set himself on fire, showcasing her calm yet assertive approach to handling crises. Simultaneously, Kevin Weatherill, an accountant, seeks a pay raise from his boss, Nevison Gallagher, to send his daughter to a private school, but is denied, revealing his underlying resentment towards Nevison.

Meanwhile, Richard, Catherine's ex-husband, informs her that Tommy Lee Royce, the man responsible for her daughter's death, has been released from prison, shaking Catherine to her core. Back at home, Catherine deals with her grandson Ryan's behavioral issues at school, adding to her stress and emotional turmoil. Catherine meets Richard for dinner to discuss family issues and to try and learn more about Tommy Lee Royce, but comes up empty.

Driven by desperation and resentment, Kevin approaches Ashley Cowgill, a local businessman, proposing a kidnapping scheme targeting Nevison's daughter, Ann, for ransom. Ashley, seeing an opportunity, agrees and recruits Tommy Lee Royce and Lewis Whippey to carry out the abduction. As Kevin tries to call it off Ashley pressures him to move forward, threatening him and his family.

On the day of the kidnapping, Catherine responds to a call, dealing with an overdose. As she wraps up, she spots Tommy Lee Royce further down the street, realizing he's back. Soon after, Tommy and Lewis stage a car accident to abduct Ann. As Catherine deals with family drama, Ann is held captive in a cellar. Nevison receives a ransom call, and he enlists Kevin's help to figure out the ransom. Ultimately, events spiral out of control as the kidnapping plot unfolds, leading to a series of escalating conflicts and moral compromises.

Act 1

The episode establishes Sergeant Catherine Cawood, a resilient police officer, through her calm and effective handling of a volatile situation involving a man threatening self-immolation. This initial sequence highlights her no-nonsense demeanor, practical skills, and underlying compassion. Concurrently, the narrative introduces Kevin Weatherill, a financially struggling accountant burdened by resentment towards his wealthy boss, Nevison Gallagher, who dismisses Kevin's plea for a pay raise to afford his daughter's private education. The central conflict of the series is decisively launched when Catherine's ex-husband, Richard, delivers the devastating news of Tommy Lee Royce's release from prison. Tommy is the man who raped Catherine's daughter, Becky, leading to her suicide, and this revelation profoundly destabilizes Catherine, redirecting her focus and igniting a deep-seated desire for justice. Further compounding Catherine's personal stress, she contends with her grandson Ryan's disruptive behavior at school, reflecting the ongoing challenges of her guardianship. In a desperate and misguided attempt to secure his family's future and exact a measure of revenge, Kevin approaches Ashley Cowgill, a local businessman with criminal ties, proposing the abduction of Nevison's daughter, Ann, for ransom. Ashley, perceiving a lucrative opportunity, readily agrees to the plan and enlists Lewis Whippey and, significantly, Tommy Lee Royce to execute the kidnapping. This pivotal development intertwines Catherine's personal vendetta with Kevin's criminal plot, setting the stage for an intricate and dangerous collision of lives and motivations.

Act 2

Following the agreement to kidnap Ann, Kevin Weatherill delves deeper into his criminal conspiracy, revealing to Ashley Cowgill his profound, long-standing resentment towards Nevison Gallagher, rooted in a perceived betrayal regarding their fathers' business partnership. This revelation underscores Kevin's mixed motivations of financial desperation and personal vengeance. Simultaneously, Catherine Cawood grapples with the emotional fallout of Tommy Lee Royce's release. She visits her daughter Becky's grave, a poignant moment of grief, and later confides in Mrs. Beresford, Ryan's headteacher, the harrowing truth of Becky's rape by Tommy and subsequent suicide. This deeply personal disclosure exposes Catherine's core trauma and her fears about Ryan's genetic connection to his biological father, Tommy, intensifying her internal conflict and hinting at her potential for extreme action. A significant turning point for Kevin occurs when Nevison, unexpectedly, offers to pay both his daughters' school fees and promote him to Deputy Managing Director, revealing his wife Helen's liver cancer as the catalyst for his generosity. This act of kindness completely undermines Kevin's initial motivation for the kidnapping, plunging him into a moral quagmire. Despite this, when Kevin attempts to call off the plan, Ashley aggressively threatens Kevin and his family, effectively trapping him in the dangerous scheme. Catherine, meanwhile, continues to wrestle with her desire for revenge, discussing her violent fantasies about Tommy with Richard, highlighting the depth of her anger and her struggle to remain within the bounds of the law.

Act 3

The act commences with Kevin Weatherill's frantic, yet ultimately futile, attempts to call off the kidnapping, as Ashley Cowgill dismisses his pleas and reinforces his threats, leaving Kevin trapped and terrified. Desperate, Kevin drives to the police station, intending to confess, but his fear overwhelms him, and he flees before speaking to Catherine Cawood. Simultaneously, Ann Gallagher drives her Mini, unaware of the impending danger, as Tommy Lee Royce and Lewis Whippey stalk her in their van. They stage a car accident, a calculated maneuver to force Ann out of her vehicle. Tommy then brutally punches Ann, subduing her, and they abduct her, demonstrating Tommy's inherent violence and Lewis's shocked complicity. While responding to an unrelated 999 call, Catherine, with her keen observational skills, spots Tommy Lee Royce on the street, confirming his presence in the area and bringing her personal vendetta into immediate, tangible proximity with the unfolding crime. Ann is subsequently held captive in a cold, damp cellar, subjected to Tommy's menacing presence. The kidnapping plot escalates dramatically when Nevison Gallagher receives a chilling ransom call from Ashley, who, using Ann's phone, demands a million pounds and issues dire threats of violence if the police are involved. Overwhelmed and panicked, Nevison, unaware of Kevin's complicity, immediately contacts Kevin to help him navigate the financial logistics of raising the ransom. The episode concludes with Kevin caught in an agonizing moral trap, forced to aid the man he intended to harm, as Catherine unknowingly circles closer to the architect of her deepest pain, setting the stage for a dramatic and inevitable confrontation.
