Happy Valley S01E05
As Catherine recovers from a brutal assault, she grapples with the knowledge that Tommy Lee Royce is still on the loose, while Kevin's involvement in Ann's kidnapping leads to dire consequences, and Ashley's deal endangers him and his family.
Following Ann Gallagher's rescue, Catherine Cawood lies in critical condition in hospital, grappling with the fallout of Tommy Lee Royce's brutality. Kevin Weatherill, implicated in Ann's kidnapping, faces interrogation and arrest. He desperately tries to minimise his role, but his lies unravel, leading to his imprisonment and increasing threats to Jenny and his family. Meanwhile, Tommy, blinded by Catherine, escapes the cellar where he held Ann. Desperate for help, he contacts Ashley Cowgill who abandons him, leading Tommy to seek assistance from Lewis Whippey.
As Catherine fights for her life, Ashley cuts a deal with authorities to reduce his sentence, offering up information about a major drug operation, which brings him a temporary reprieve from prison but endangers him and his family as he becomes a target. Catherine, recovering physically but struggling emotionally and mentally, is informed of Ashley’s betrayal. Her emotional turmoil is further complicated by her strained relationship with Ryan and her complicated feelings with Richard causing her to become more isolated.
Tommy, hidden by Lewis and Brett, grows increasingly desperate as the police close in and tempers fray. The news report makes it clear that the police have launched a manhunt, making things difficult for Tommy. The tension explodes when Lewis is killed during an argument, and Tommy loses all control and murders Brett knowing the “safehouse” has been comprised.
Phillip informs Catherine that Ashley has given information that helps the police greatly. Catherine visits Becky’s grave to cope with her depression. She meets to have a discussion with Richard about the situation. During which she makes the comment that she can’t stand Ryan. He is horrified by this and is dismissive of her. But when Phil Crabtree asks Catherine to be brought up to speed, she finally breaks through and is thankful for him for helping. Realizing that he might never pay for what he has done, Catherine accepts and agrees to move on.
Tommy, now in Brett’s clothes, is on the run through town. Desperate, Tommy disguises himself as a student by buying the glasses and buying "War and Peace" and hatches a plan, he will reach out and find Ryan. He boards the bus going to Hebden Bridge. Though the net is closing in, for now Tommy remains on the loose.

The episode opens in the immediate, chaotic aftermath of Ann Gallagher's rescue, with Catherine Cawood found critically injured. While Catherine undergoes emergency surgery, the police quickly move to apprehend those involved. Kevin Weatherill, initially attempting to minimize his complicity in the kidnapping, faces intense interrogation from Phil Crabtree. His lies quickly unravel under scrutiny, leading to his swift arrest when ANPR evidence contradicts his fabricated alibi. Concurrently, Tommy Lee Royce, blinded by Catherine's spray, manages a desperate escape from the cellar. He attempts to contact Ashley Cowgill for aid, but Ashley, prioritizing self-preservation, abandons him, leading Tommy to seek refuge with Lewis Whippey. Ashley's calculated betrayal, however, does not spare him; police arrest him for abduction and demanding money with menaces. As Catherine regains consciousness in the hospital, she receives the devastating news that Tommy Lee Royce remains at large, a revelation that profoundly impacts her, transforming her physical recovery into a new, urgent emotional and mental battle against the ongoing threat.

Following the initial arrests and Tommy's escape, the narrative shifts to the profound emotional and psychological toll on the characters three weeks later. Ann Gallagher, grappling with the trauma of her rape, confides in Catherine, entrusting her with the difficult task of informing her father. Catherine, now physically recovering but deeply depressed, isolates herself, avoiding contact and expressing indifference to a Queen's Police Medal nomination. Mike Taylor's visit brings news of Kevin's brutal assault in prison and Ashley Cowgill's imminent bail, hinting at a deal with authorities. Meanwhile, Kevin, in a prison visit with Jenny, displays a disturbing lack of remorse, attempting to blame her and Nevison for his predicament, revealing his moral decay. Tommy Lee Royce and Lewis Whippey, increasingly stir-crazy in their hiding place, narrowly evade detection during a police door-to-door search, intensifying the pressure on their fragile alliance. Catherine's emotional state deteriorates further during a harsh confrontation with Ryan, where she expresses profound resentment, culminating in a bitter argument at home. Her subsequent lunch with Richard exposes the raw depth of her grief for Becky and her inability to reconcile with Ryan, whom she confesses she 'can't stand,' linking his existence to Tommy Lee Royce and her past trauma. Richard's attempts to defend Ryan and challenge Catherine's self-pity only deepen her despair.
