Knives Out

When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey is found dead after his 85th birthday, a master detective arrives to investigate, uncovering a web of family secrets, hidden motives, and unexpected twists among the eccentric Thrombey clan.

After the death of wealthy mystery novelist Harlan Thrombey, Detective Benoit Blanc is mysteriously hired to investigate. Harlan's dysfunctional family, gathered for his 85th birthday, becomes the prime suspects. Among them are Harlan's children – Linda, a successful businesswoman, Walt, who manages Harlan's publishing empire, and Joni, a lifestyle guru and widow. Also present are their respective families, including Linda's son Ransom, Walt's wife and son, and Joni's daughter Meg.

The night of the party, Marta Cabrera, Harlan's kind-hearted nurse, administers his medication. However, she mistakenly injects him with a lethal dose of morphine instead of his usual medication. Unable to find the antidote and knowing the paramedics wouldn't arrive in time, Harlan instructs Marta on an elaborate plan to establish her alibi, ensuring she won't be suspected of his murder and protecting her undocumented mother from deportation.

As Blanc investigates, he uncovers a series of secrets and lies within the Thrombey family. Richard is revealed to be having an affair, Joni is stealing money from Harlan, and Walt is desperate to secure film rights for Harlan's books. Ransom, the black sheep of the family, was cut out of Harlan's will. The family's dynamics become increasingly volatile, and their desperation to inherit Harlan's fortune intensifies. Blanc focuses on Marta, noticing her tells when she lies.

Fran, the housekeeper, discovers Ransom tampering with Marta's medical bag on the night of Harlan's death. She sends blackmail notes to Ransom, threatening to expose him with evidence from her medical examiner cousin. Ransom, in turn, brutally murders Fran to protect his secrets. Marta receives the email, and in an effort to protect herself, she races to the location in the email. There she finds Fran, dying, after being attacked by Ransom.

Ultimately, Blanc exposes Ransom and his attempts to frame Marta for Harlan's death. At the climax, Ransom attempts to kill Marta with a prop knife, but she is unharmed. Marta then vomits on Ransom and is thus revealed to be a liar because she asserted that Fran was still alive. However, both his plot and the confession are overheard by police, which confirms Ransom’s guilt - and also Marta’s innocence in both deaths. After much back and forth, the case is resolved, and Marta inherits Harlan's fortune. She watches with compassion from the balcony of the house now hers as the police take Ransom away The film concludes with Marta standing on the balcony of the Thrombey estate holding Harlan's coffee mug surveying her new kingdom. This position implies that Marta truly won Harlan's game and is the rightful heir to his legacy.

Act 1

The narrative opens with the grim discovery of renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey's body, his throat slit, by his housekeeper Fran. The immediate aftermath introduces Marta Cabrera, Harlan's compassionate nurse, who awakens from a nightmare, hinting at her deep involvement. A week later, as the police investigate, the eccentric and dysfunctional Thrombey family—Linda, Richard, Walt, Joni, and Meg—are paraded before Detective Benoit Blanc. Each family member, interviewed in turn, paints a self-serving picture of the night of Harlan's 85th birthday party, while subtly revealing their underlying greed and animosities. Blanc, a renowned private investigator mysteriously hired, observes Marta's unique physiological tell: she vomits when she lies. This quirk becomes central as Blanc subtly probes the family's secrets, exposing Richard's affair, Joni's financial misdealings, and Walt's professional frustrations with Harlan. The act culminates in a pivotal flashback from Marta's perspective, revealing the true circumstances of Harlan's death: an accidental overdose of morphine administered by Marta, followed by Harlan's desperate, elaborate plan to help her establish an alibi and protect her undocumented mother from deportation. Harlan, believing he has only minutes to live, instructs Marta to stage his suicide, including a complex escape and re-entry into the house. Marta, against her nature, successfully executes the plan and lies to Blanc without vomiting, a feat that both reassures and deeply troubles her. The act concludes with Marta's final, harrowing flashback, revealing that Harlan, upon realizing the antidote was missing, took his own life to ensure her alibi, cementing her profound guilt and setting the stage for the unfolding investigation.

Act 2

Following Marta's harrowing confession to herself, the narrative shifts to Blanc's official investigation of the Thrombey estate, with Marta reluctantly serving as his "Watson." During their inspection, Marta experiences several close calls, nearly exposing her staged alibi through footprints in the mud and a broken trellis piece, both of which Blanc keenly observes. The tension escalates dramatically during the reading of Harlan's will, where the family discovers Marta has been named the sole heir to his vast fortune and estate, completely disinheriting them all. This revelation ignites a furious backlash from the Thrombeys, who turn their collective rage and accusations on Marta. Amidst the chaos, Ransom, the family's black sheep, surprisingly offers Marta his support, revealing he knows Harlan didn't commit suicide and is aware of her vomiting tell. He proposes an alliance: they will work together to expose the "real" killer, and Marta will give him a cut of the inheritance. Marta, still reeling, is then confronted by Walt, who attempts to blackmail her by threatening to expose her mother's undocumented status if she doesn't renounce the will. Marta, emboldened by her new position, defiantly refuses. A mysterious blackmail note arrives, leading Marta and Ransom to the site of an explosion at the medical examiner's office, which destroyed all evidence of Harlan's toxicology report. They then race to a new rendezvous point specified in an email, narrowly escaping Blanc's pursuit. At the new location, they discover Fran, the housekeeper, dying, having been attacked. Despite the immense personal risk and the potential to further incriminate herself, Marta's inherent kindness prevails; she calls 911 and attempts CPR on Fran, demonstrating her unwavering moral compass.

Act 3

The climax begins with Marta, resigned to her fate, preparing to confess the full truth of Harlan's death to the assembled Thrombey family. However, Blanc dramatically intervenes, revealing that he has pieced together the entire elaborate scheme. He exposes Ransom as the true mastermind, detailing how Ransom, upon learning of his disinheritance, switched Harlan's medication vials, stole the antidote, and then anonymously hired Blanc to expose Marta, believing she would be implicated in Harlan's death. Blanc then delivers the ultimate twist: Marta, due to her intimate knowledge of the medications' appearance, had unknowingly switched the vials back, administering the *correct* medication to Harlan. This means Harlan's death was, in fact, a suicide, as he believed he had been lethally poisoned and took his own life to protect Marta. Marta's act of saving Fran's life, despite the risk to her inheritance and freedom, becomes the final piece of evidence, as Fran is revealed to be alive and able to confirm Ransom's attack. Enraged and cornered, Ransom launches a desperate, final assault on Marta with a prop knife, a futile act that only serves to further incriminate him. He is apprehended by the police. In the aftermath, Linda discovers a hidden message from Harlan, hinting at deeper family secrets. The film concludes with Marta, now the rightful owner of the Thrombey estate, standing on the balcony, holding Harlan's coffee mug. She has won, not by playing Harlan's game, but by adhering to her own unwavering moral code, embodying the legacy Harlan truly intended.
