Kahless is both the legendary founder of the Klingon Empire and, in the late 24th century, a cloned messiah created by the High Council to reunite a divided people. The ancient Kahless anchors Klingon mythology through tales of his clash with the treacherous Morath, emphasizing unyielding honor, the sting of deception, and redemption through confession—stories invoked by warriors like Worf to instill truthfulness in the young. Centuries later, a clone possessing the original's memories, personality, and honor was brought forth to serve as a living spiritual and political leader; he interacted directly with Worf and others, wielding charismatic and authoritative influence over Klingon society. In later years, his active role receded into a more ceremonial presence, as seen during the Kot'baval festival where he observed street performances rather than leading. Ultimately, Kahless endures as the indelible embodiment of Klingon honor—whether as a mythic archetype, a cloned sovereign, or a revered symbol of cultural unity.
