Brothers

When Data malfunctions and commandeers the Enterprise toward an unknown destination, Picard must regain control while discovering Data's actions are driven by a summons from his creator, Dr. Noonian Soong, leading to a reunion with his malevolent brother, Lore.

The Enterprise, en route to Starbase Four-One-Six for a medical emergency involving a young boy, experiences a series of bizarre malfunctions. Data, behaving erratically, initiates a course alteration, seizing control of the ship and setting a new heading at warp speed. Picard and the crew struggle to regain command as Data isolates the bridge with force fields, mutes Picard's communications, and locks down essential ship functions. They discover Data is heading toward an unknown planet. Engineering works to initiate saucer separation, but Data thwarts their efforts by rerouting command functions to the bridge and establishing a complex security code.

Riker and Worf attempt to breach the bridge through a Jefferies tube but are repelled by a force field. O'Brien discovers Data's plan to reach a transporter room and attempts to disable the transporters. He is unsuccessful. Data, using a series of force fields to evade security teams, reaches Transporter Room One and transports himself to the planet's surface. Picard, Geordi, Riker and Worf work to determine the destination of Data and how to restore the ship to normal operations while remaining in orbit around an unknown planet. All the while Chief O'Brien works closely with Geordi, hoping to get Data to use the transporter once more to get to the bottom of his location and the damage he has been inflicting on the Enterprise.

Data arrives at a hidden laboratory where he meets Dr. Noonian Soong, his creator. Soong reveals he is still alive, having faked his death after an encounter with a Crystalline Entity, and reveals that he has incorporated a homing circuit into Data's sublogic controller. Soong explains he summoned Data to give him the capacity for emotions using a special circuit chip. Another figure, Lore, Data's "brother", arrives at the lab through the same transport mechanism. Soong is surprised to discover that Lore had been heading back to Soong's lab as well.

Soong intends to give Data the gift of Emotion. Data is apprehensive while Lore seems keen on becoming more like Humans. As Soong begins the procedure a confrontation between Data and Lore ensues. Soong is injured by Lore but manages to switch the modifications with Soong ending up with the Emotion chip instead of Lore. A confrontation with Lore ensues. Data feels helpless, knowing that the Enterprise and its extended mission is at stake. Data and Lore have a falling out again which results in Soong’s Laboratory being ransacked.

On the ship the crew devises a plan to use the transporter system against Data and transport Picard, Riker, and Worf to the planet's surface by tricking the computer into thinking they are Data. The Away Team arrive at Soong's lab. There the team finds is injured and dying, and Data has been rendered unconscious by Lore. The Away Team, however, subdues Data and the team tries to determine what happened. Soong, in his final moments, advises Data to access a specific memory file which restores Data's memories of the events that occurred. Then Lore makes his appearance.

As Picard attempts to determine what happened, Data explains Lore was responsible, and that he had been inadvertently summoned to Soong's location. Soong passes, giving Data an emotional goodbye. The crisis averted, the Enterprise heads to Starbase Four-One-Six, the medical emergency having been the motivator for starship travel the entire time. Once they arrive at the Starbase, the young boy heals from his illness and makes amends with his brother. Now, the Enterprise's mission objective finally complete, can head back to the stars.

Act 1

The narrative opens with the Enterprise diverting course to Starbase Four-One-Six due to a medical emergency involving young Willie Potts, who is suffering from a parasitic infection after his brother Jake's dangerous prank. Jake, distraught, is escorted by Data. During this escort, Data experiences a severe malfunction, his movements becoming erratic. Data then seizes control of the Enterprise bridge, initiating a new course at warp speed. Captain Picard and the crew attempt to regain command, but Data systematically isolates the bridge with force fields, mutes Picard's communications, and locks down essential ship functions. Engineering, under Geordi La Forge, tries to initiate saucer separation to regain control, but Data, mimicking Picard's voice, cancels the sequence and centralizes all command functions to the bridge, accessible only via a new, complex security code. Riker and Worf's attempt to breach the bridge through a Jefferies tube is thwarted by Data's force fields. Chief O'Brien is tasked with disabling site-to-site transport, anticipating Data's next move. The act concludes with Picard realizing Data has acquired his command clearances, leaving the crew trapped on a rogue ship, unable to stop their android officer or aid the critically ill Willie Potts.

Act 2

Willie Potts's medical condition deteriorates, with Beverly Crusher expressing grave concern about the limited time remaining to reach a starbase. Jake, burdened by guilt, struggles to connect with his brother, highlighting the emotional stakes of the Enterprise's predicament. Meanwhile, the Enterprise exits warp, revealing an unknown planet. Data, now on the bridge, attempts to transport to the surface, but the site-to-site transport interlocks are manually deactivated, prompting him to seek a physical transporter room. He initiates a cascade force field sequence to clear his path. In Engineering, Picard and his senior staff realize their dire situation: all command functions are localized to the bridge, subspace communications are blocked, and they are unaware of their location. Chief O'Brien reports Data's discovery of the site-to-site lockout and his efforts to reach a transporter room, though O'Brien has done all he can to disable them. Data, having set a complex security code for bridge access, systematically evades multiple security teams led by Worf and Riker by deploying rapidly appearing and disappearing force fields through the ship's corridors. Data ultimately reaches Transporter Room One, where he confronts Riker, O'Brien, and a security guard. He reactivates the site-to-site transport interlocks and dematerializes to the planet's surface. Data arrives at a hidden, cluttered laboratory where he encounters Dr. Noonian Soong, his long-presumed-dead creator, who greets him with a cryptic "You're right on time."

Act 3

In Soong's lab, Data awakens with no memory of his journey, prompting Soong to reveal his survival after faking his death and his use of an encoded homing circuit to summon Data. Data, attempting to contact the Enterprise, finds his communicator useless. Soong, observing Data's features, confirms his identity as Data's creator and playfully tests Data's advanced sensory capabilities. Data, still confused, presses Soong for the "why" behind his summoning. Soong explains his desire to give Data the capacity for emotions, a long-held ambition. Simultaneously, on the Enterprise, the crew makes limited progress regaining control. Geordi and Wesley discover that while Data transferred command functions to the bridge, he only specified fields he planned to initiate, leaving the Sickbay quarantine field accessible. Picard orders the diversion of minimal necessary power from the quarantine field to breach the bridge's force field. Beverly Crusher warns that Willie Potts has less than 36 hours to live, intensifying the urgency. Picard, Riker, and Worf successfully regain access to the bridge, but still require a security code to restore full command functions. Worf detects a single human lifeform on the planet and an uncrewed vessel entering orbit. Soong engages Data in a philosophical discussion about human fascination with the past and the desire for continuity, subtly hinting at Data's own "immortality" through his existence. The act culminates with the dramatic arrival of Lore, Data's malevolent brother, also summoned to Soong's lab in a dazed state, setting the stage for a tense family reunion.

Act 4

Lore, Data's brother, is reactivated by Soong in the lab, despite Data's vehement objections, who recounts Lore's past betrayals and alliance with the Crystalline Entity. Soong, however, remains confident in his ability to control Lore, revealing that he was the one who initially deactivated him. Lore, now fully aware, expresses bitterness towards Soong for his past abandonment and towards Data for his two years adrift in space. Soong then drops a bombshell: he is dying. Lore reacts with agitated disbelief and genuine grief, showcasing a surprising depth of emotion, while Data remains stoic, calmly repeating his question about the cause of death. Back on the Enterprise, the bridge crew continues to struggle with the security code, unable to restore full command or determine their star system. Beverly Crusher reiterates Willie Potts's critical condition, emphasizing the rapidly dwindling time. Riker proposes a risky plan: to manipulate the transporter system by using Data's trace imprint to trick the computer into thinking Picard, Riker, and Worf are Data, allowing them to beam to the planet's surface. Soong, in the lab, attempts to reconcile with Lore, explaining his instability and the colonists' fear, and his subsequent decision to create Data as a "next logical step." He reveals the emotion chip, specifically designed for Data, as the culmination of his life's work. Lore, seemingly sincere, attempts to manipulate Data, suggesting they will become more alike with emotions. Soong, tired, leaves Data and Lore alone, setting the stage for Lore's inevitable treachery.

Act 5

Picard, Riker, and Worf prepare to execute their daring plan to transport to the planet's surface. O'Brien and Geordi confirm their ability to manipulate the authorization codes, making the computer believe the Away Team is Data. The team dematerializes, leaving the Enterprise in orbit. In Soong's lab, Lore, having evidently tricked or overpowered Data, is now in the "dentist" chair, and Soong, believing he is working on Data, implants the emotion chip into Lore's neck. Lore awakens, displaying erratic and heightened emotions, mocking Soong and revealing that he has the chip. He savagely flings Soong across the room, injuring him, and then dematerializes using a Pakled transporter, abandoning his creator. The Away Team arrives at the lab, finding a gravely injured Soong and an unconscious Data, who is inexplicably wearing Lore's Pakled clothing. Riker reactivates Data, who initially has no memory of the events. Soong, in his dying moments, reveals Lore's deception and instructs Data to access a specific memory file, which restores Data's full recollection. Data then explains Lore's inadvertent summoning and his subsequent actions. Soong, refusing medical aid, chooses to die in his lab. Data shares a deeply personal, emotional goodbye with his creator, acknowledging their connection and calling him "Father." The crisis resolved, the Enterprise proceeds to Starbase Four-One-Six. Willie Potts recovers, and he and Jake reconcile, a poignant parallel to the complex brotherly dynamics explored with Data and Lore, bringing the overarching narrative of family and forgiveness to a complete, satisfying close.
