Legacy

When the Enterprise responds to a distress call from Turkana Four, the birthplace of Tasha Yar, the crew encounters Ishara, Tasha's sister, who offers to help rescue captured crewmen but whose loyalties become suspect, forcing Data to confront betrayal.

The Enterprise, led by Captain Picard, diverts from its scheduled mission to respond to a distress call from a Federation freighter orbiting Turkana Four, Tasha Yar's home world. Arriving too late to save the freighter, they discover its crew escaped in a pod that crashed near the colony. An away team, including Riker, Data, Worf, and Dr. Crusher, beams down to the planet's surface, a lawless settlement controlled by warring factions: the Coalition and the Alliance. They soon encounter Hayne, leader of the Coalition, who informs them Alliance is holding the missing crewmen for ransom.

Hayne introduces Picard to Ishara Yar, Tasha's sister. Ishara offers her assistance due to her familiarity with the colony and Alliance territory. Despite some skepticism from the crew, Picard accepts Ishara's help, and she beams aboard the Enterprise. As Ishara integrates with the crew and helps them map the colony's tunnels, Data develops a unique bond with her, intrigued by her connection to Tasha and her unfamiliar perspective on friendship.

The Enterprise receives a transmission from one of the captured crewmen, delivering an ultimatum from the Alliance. Ishara proposes a plan to infiltrate Alliance territory and rescue the crewmen. The plan involves her intentionally triggering the Alliance's proximity detectors, creating a diversion. While Riker, Data, Worf, and Geordi prepare for the rescue, Beverly conducts a DNA test confirming Ishara is indeed Tasha's sister.

During the rescue mission, the away team secures the crewmen, but Ishara deviates from the plan. Data discovers her attempting to disable the Alliance's defense systems, revealing her true intention: to trigger an attack by the Coalition and destroy the Alliance. Ishara's betrayal forces Data to confront her, and ultimately, he stuns her to prevent her from completing her plan.

Ishara is taken back to the Enterprise, where Picard expresses his disappointment and Data escorts her to the transporter room for her return to Turkana Four. The episode concludes with Data reflecting on the experience of being deceived and the nature of trust and friendship. He is left pondering the complexities of human emotion and the potential for betrayal, while holding onto Ishara's magnetic implant as a reminder of the experience.

Act 1

The Enterprise responds to a distress call from the freighter Arcos, which is orbiting Turkana Four, Tasha Yar's home world. The Arcos explodes, but an escape pod is detected heading for the colony. Captain Picard, despite warnings about the lawless nature of Turkana Four, dispatches an away team consisting of Riker, Data, Worf, and Dr. Crusher to investigate. The team beams down to a bombed-out settlement and encounters members of the Coalition, one of the warring factions. Their leader, Hayne, informs the Federation officers that the rival Alliance holds the missing crewmen for ransom. Hayne attempts to leverage the situation, offering assistance in exchange for Starfleet phasers, a proposal Riker immediately rejects, recognizing it as a thinly veiled demand. The away team returns to the Enterprise to consider their options. Shortly after, Hayne contacts the Enterprise again, introducing Ishara Yar, who claims to be Tasha Yar's sister. This revelation stuns the bridge crew, fundamentally shifting the dynamics of the mission and introducing a deeply personal element to the conflict on Turkana Four.

Act 2

Following Ishara's revelation, Captain Picard and his senior staff express skepticism regarding her identity and Hayne's motives, suspecting a manipulation. Despite their reservations, Picard decides to accept Ishara's offer of assistance, viewing it as a viable option to rescue the captured crewmen. Ishara beams aboard the Enterprise, where she immediately notes Data's android nature and initially assumes he is a combat unit. Data, intrigued by her connection to Tasha and her stark perspective, escorts her to the Observation Lounge. During their walk, Ishara dismisses Tasha's escape from Turkana Four as 'cowardice,' a statement that surprises Data and reveals a deep-seated resentment. In the lounge, Ishara offers her DNA for verification, which Beverly Crusher accepts. Ishara then provides the crew with critical intelligence about the colony's factions and the history of its conflict. The mission gains urgency when the Enterprise receives a ransom ultimatum from the Alliance via a captured crewman. Ishara proposes a daring plan to infiltrate Alliance territory, using her magnetic implant to trigger proximity alarms as a diversion. Riker initially hesitates due to the inherent danger to Ishara, but ultimately agrees. During the rescue mission, the away team successfully secures the crewmen. However, Ishara deviates from the agreed-upon plan, triggering her implant and drawing attention, but then running off. Riker, realizing she is in danger, breaks away from the primary objective to rescue her from Alliance guards, bringing her back to the Enterprise.

Act 3

Back on the Enterprise, Riker explains his risky decision to rescue Ishara, admitting his emotional response stemmed from the loss of Tasha Yar under his command. Captain Picard cautions Riker against emotional decisions but commends his actions. Dr. Crusher confirms Ishara's DNA match, definitively establishing her as Tasha's sister. Picard visits Ishara in Sickbay, sharing stories of Tasha's bravery and selflessness, attempting to reframe Ishara's perception of her sister. Ishara, visibly affected, begins to question her long-held beliefs. Later, working with Data, Ishara continues to map the colony's intricate tunnel systems, revealing the location of critical fusion generators that power the Alliance's defenses. Data, observing Ishara's curiosity about Tasha's past, explains his unique understanding of 'friendship' as a pattern of familiarity and anticipated presence, a concept that resonates deeply with Ishara as she reflects on her sister's absence. Geordi locates the captured crewmen, trapped deep within Alliance territory, necessitating a new strategy due to the depth. Data proposes a method to safely remove Ishara's magnetic implant, allowing her to guide the away team without triggering alarms. Ishara initially hesitates, acknowledging the implant's symbolic importance to her identity, but ultimately agrees. She confides in Data her growing disillusionment with the colony's violent lifestyle and expresses a desire to join Starfleet, finding the prospect of working for a common good 'appealing.' Picard, though concerned by Troi's warnings of Ishara's divided loyalties, approves the plan. Ishara, visibly distressed, informs Hayne of her decision to stay with Starfleet, hinting at the profound internal conflict she experiences as she seemingly embraces a new path.

Act 4

Dr. Crusher successfully removes Ishara's magnetic implant, marking a symbolic break from her past on Turkana Four. Ishara, feeling a profound sense of liberation, entrusts the implant to Data, asking him to keep it as a reminder, hinting at a premonition of danger. The Enterprise begins drilling a shaft through the planet's bedrock, creating a safe transport path for the away team. Riker, Data, Worf, and Ishara beam down into an isolated tunnel. Ishara, now acting as the guide, leads them confidently through the Alliance's territory, asserting that security is minimal in this deep section. However, her initial confidence wavers as she struggles to navigate the altered tunnels, admitting uncertainty about the path. Eventually, she guides them to the chamber holding the captured crewmen. Riker, Data, and Worf breach the door and secure Tan Tsu and the other crewman. Crucially, Ishara does not enter the chamber with them. Instead, she immediately deviates from the mission, deliberately heading towards a different objective. She encounters an Alliance guard, blasts him, and the injured guard triggers a loud alarm before collapsing. Ishara, despite the alarm, continues her rogue mission. Riker, realizing Ishara's disappearance and the alarm, sends Worf and the freed crewmen back to the Enterprise, while he and Data pursue Ishara. Data locates Ishara at a room-sized power generator, where she is actively manipulating controls to overload it. Data confronts her, puzzled by her actions, and Ishara reveals her true, treacherous intention: to disable the Alliance's defense systems, allowing the Coalition's three thousand troops to invade and destroy the Alliance, regardless of the Federation's involvement or the resulting casualties. She aims her phaser at Data, prepared to kill him to complete her plan.

Act 5

Ishara, with her phaser trained on Data and the fusion generator rapidly overloading, reiterates her commitment to the Coalition, stating her willingness to die for them. Data, realizing the full extent of her betrayal, questions if her friendship with him was merely a calculated part of her deception. Ishara's silence confirms his suspicion, revealing her guilt but also her unwavering resolve. As the generator's hum intensifies, Ishara desperately urges Data to leave, but he refuses, bound by his duty to prevent mass casualties. Riker arrives, distracting Ishara, who fires at him, providing Data the critical moment to stun her with his phaser. Data then quickly works to stabilize the overloading generator, averting the catastrophic explosion. Riker, examining Ishara's phaser, discovers it was set to kill, confirming the depth of her deception. Ishara is brought to the Bridge, where a palpable coolness from the crew replaces their previous warmth. Picard confronts a disappointed Hayne, who demands Ishara's immediate return. Riker angrily refutes Hayne's claims of jurisdiction, highlighting the hypocrisy of his violent regime. Picard, after a silent exchange with Ishara, orders Data to escort her to the transporter room for her return to Turkana Four. The decision surprises the crew, but Picard explains his disappointment, acknowledging that the crew, including himself, projected Tasha's qualities onto Ishara, seeing 'more than what was there.' In the transporter room, Ishara expresses regret, claiming parts of their 'friendship' were genuine, but Data, maintaining his android logic, states he cannot be emotionally injured. He energizes the transporter, and Ishara dematerializes. Later, in Riker's quarters, Data reflects on his confusion and the lingering thoughts of Ishara, likening it to a 'feedback loop.' Riker explains the inherent risk of betrayal in trust and love, acknowledging that no one is truly prepared for such pain. Data, processing this, questions if it is better not to trust, to which Riker responds that without trust, there can be no emotional bonds. The episode concludes with Data, alone in the corridor, examining Ishara's magnetic implant, his face unreadable, left to ponder the complexities of trust, deception, and the human condition.
