The Loss

When Counselor Deanna Troi suddenly loses her empathic abilities, she must confront her identity and role on the Enterprise while the crew investigates a mysterious two-dimensional lifeform pulling them dangerously towards a cosmic string fragment.

The USS Enterprise encounters strange phenomena: sensor anomalies and disorientation affecting Counselor Troi, who abruptly loses her empathic abilities. The ship finds itself pulled along by seemingly two-dimensional lifeforms. Troi struggles with her newfound disability, contemplating resignation as she feels disconnected from everyone, including her close friends and partner, Riker, after being the ships counselor for so long.

As the crew investigates, they discover that the flat entities are unknowingly heading towards a cosmic string fragment, a celestial object with immense gravitational pull, which would be bad for them. Data and La Forge try to understand and communicate with the beings, but their efforts are initially fruitless. Troi's attempts to counsel Ensign Brooks, who is grieving over her husband's death, become strained due to her inability to sense others' emotions. Feeling helpless and doubting her abilities, Troi resigns from her position, as she is unable to do her job, or so she thinks. A heart-to-heart with Riker forces her to acknowledge what she has lost, and that he and the others cant do it for her. After the failure of force, Picard asks her to assist Data in understanding the two-dimensional beings.

Troi and Data brainstorm and make the breakthrough that the beings are instinct-driven like moths to a flame, as the previous attempts to help may be interpreted differently by the beings. They also speculated whether the cosmic string it isn't a threat but an attraction. They theorize that mimicking the string's vibration might cause the beings to change course. The crew implements a plan to use the ship's deflector dish to project the string's unique frequencies and alter the path of the beings. Although initially failing, they adjust the projection until the beings slow down. The Enterprise breaks free, but the two-dimensional entities continue toward the cosmic string.

Troi suddenly experiences a surge of emotion and realizes the beings were not in danger but were intentionally moving toward the string, describing it as "home". Troi regains her empathic abilities. The ship proceeds to T'lli Beta, as originally planned. Troi reconciles with Beverly and thanks Riker for helping her confront her limitations and humanity. She also learns to have hope, even false hope.

Act 1

This act introduces Counselor Deanna Troi, showcasing her empathic abilities as she effectively counsels Ensign Janet Brooks through her grief. The narrative establishes Troi's core identity and role on the Enterprise. Concurrently, the ship encounters its first mysterious sensor anomaly, a brief, unidentifiable phenomenon that hints at an external threat. Following her successful counseling session, Troi experiences sudden dizziness and disorientation, symptoms that align with Data's detection of strange, plane-polarized objects. The act culminates dramatically with Troi collapsing unconscious in her office, signaling a profound personal crisis that directly correlates with the emerging external mystery. This setup establishes both the internal conflict for Troi and the external threat facing the Enterprise, intertwining their fates from the outset. The contrast between Troi's initial competence and her sudden incapacitation underscores the severity of her impending loss and the challenges ahead.

Act 2

The Enterprise's attempts to resume its course to T'lli Beta are violently thwarted by an unseen force, confirming the presence of a powerful, unknown external influence. The ship becomes immovably pulled along at sub-light speed, indicating a significant and persistent threat. Simultaneously, Troi undergoes a medical examination by Dr. Beverly Crusher, who diagnoses her with "unresponsive neural cells" and "brain damage," directly linking her profound empathic loss to a physical cause. This medical confirmation solidifies Troi's internal conflict, shifting it from a temporary ailment to a potentially permanent disability. During a senior staff briefing, Troi attempts to sense lifeforms but realizes with growing horror that she senses "nothing" from anyone, including her closest colleagues. This terrifying realization marks the full impact of her condition, leaving her isolated and panicked as Riker rushes to her side.

Act 3

Troi struggles intensely with her newfound disability, displaying anger and defensiveness towards Riker, whom she perceives as treating her differently. She attempts to resume her counseling duties, but her session with Ensign Brooks highlights her inability to provide effective guidance without her empathic sense, leaving her desperate and frustrated. Meanwhile, Data and Geordi launch a probe, which reveals the two-dimensional nature of the mysterious entities pulling the Enterprise, providing the first concrete understanding of the external threat. Troi's frustration escalates into an angry confrontation with Beverly, where she lashes out, expressing her profound sense of loss and isolation. Overwhelmed and feeling useless, Troi retreats to her quarters, where she collapses to the floor in despair, signifying her emotional rock bottom and the complete breakdown of her professional and personal identity.

Act 4

Feeling utterly unable to perform her duties, Troi formally resigns as ship's counselor, despite Captain Picard's attempts to persuade her that empathy is not a prerequisite for the role. This decision marks a critical turning point in her personal journey, as she actively rejects her previous identity. Riker confronts Troi in her quarters, first offering comfort, then challenging her by suggesting she is scared of losing her "advantage" and needs to embrace her human side, forcing her to acknowledge a deeper truth about herself. The Enterprise's attempt to break free from the graviton field using a controlled warp jump fails, escalating the external threat and demonstrating the beings' unexpected resilience. Data observes a momentary alteration in the entities' movement pattern during the failed attempt, offering a glimmer of hope for understanding them. Guinan offers Troi a unique perspective on human intuition and instinct, subtly guiding her towards new ways of perceiving. The act culminates with the discovery of a cosmic string fragment, revealing that the two-dimensional entities are not just pulling the Enterprise, but are heading directly towards this immense gravitational hazard, intensifying the stakes for everyone.

Act 5

The Enterprise faces imminent destruction, with only hours remaining before being pulled into the cosmic string. Initial attempts to deter the two-dimensional beings with photon torpedoes prove ineffective, highlighting the crew's desperation and the unique nature of the threat. In a pivotal moment, Ensign Brooks returns to Troi, affirming the profound impact of their previous counseling session despite Troi's lack of empathy, providing Troi with a crucial validation of her non-empathic abilities. Captain Picard, recognizing Troi's unique insights even without her empathic sense, asks her to assist Data in formulating a strategy to understand and communicate with the beings. This request re-instates Troi's purpose and challenges her to rely on her human intuition and intellect. The act sets the stage for Troi's return to active duty, albeit in a new capacity, and emphasizes the critical need for her perspective to solve the crisis.

Act 6

Troi, now working with Data, makes a critical breakthrough by theorizing that the two-dimensional beings are instinct-driven, similar to moths drawn to a flame, and that the cosmic string might be an attraction rather than a threat. This insight fundamentally shifts the crew's understanding of the situation. Data and Geordi implement a plan to mimic the cosmic string's unique frequencies using the ship's deflector dish. After initial difficulties, they successfully adjust the projection, causing the beings to slow down and allowing the Enterprise to break free from the graviton field and warp away to safety. In a climactic moment, Troi experiences a sudden, overwhelming surge of emotion, regaining her empathic abilities. She realizes the beings were intentionally moving towards the string, perceiving it as "home." The narrative concludes with Troi reconciling with Beverly and expressing gratitude to Riker for helping her confront her limitations and embrace her humanity, demonstrating her personal growth and renewed appreciation for her dual heritage. She has learned the value of hope, even when faced with uncertainty.
