Devil's Due

Captain Picard must prove a charismatic, seemingly all-powerful woman claiming to be Ardra, an ancientVentaxian devil, is a fraud before she enslaves the population as stipulated in a thousand-year-old contract.

The Enterprise responds to an emergency transmission from the Ventax Two science station, finding the planet in chaos as the Ventaxians believe their world is ending with the return of Ardra, a figure from their past who promised peace for a millennium in exchange for their servitude upon her return. Captain Picard, skeptical, investigates after beaming up Dr. Howard Clark, the science station director.

Picard learns that Ardra's arrival is supposedly heralded by geological tremors and visions, both of which have occurred, fueling mass hysteria. When Picard, Data, Worf, and Troi materialize on the planet, they encounter Ardra, a stunning woman who asserts her claim to the Ventaxians' souls. She displays seemingly supernatural powers, reinforcing the Ventaxians' belief in her.

Picard remains unconvinced, suspecting trickery. He challenges Ardra's legitimacy and demands to see the ancient contract. Data examines the scrolls and confirms the contract's existence and its legally binding terms. Ardra then claims ownership of the Enterprise itself as part of the contract, which Data confirms is a valid interpretation. Picard, determined to expose Ardra as a fraud, studies confidence games and seeks a loophole in the contract while Ardra continues to taunt him, even invading his private quarters.

Picard finds a legal precedent that allows for an arbitration. He proposes the arbitration and Ardra accepts, choosing Data, who is impartial, as the arbiter. During the hearing, Ardra presents historical evidence and witnesses to support her claim, but Picard argues that the Ventaxians achieved their advancements themselves. With Geordi's help, Picard discovers Ardra is using a cloaked ship to create illusions of her powers.

During the final moments of the arbitration, Picard exposes Ardra's ruse. He reveals that Ardra has no real powers. With assistance from the Enterprise crew, he replicates her magical acts, demonstrating they are technologically based. Ardra's past is exposed, revealing her history of deceiving people for petty schemes. With her deception revealed, the Ventaxians reject Ardra, nullify their contract, and reclaim their autonomy. Ardra departs, leaving Picard to reflect on the Ventaxians' capacity for self-determination.

Act 0

The teaser opens with Data on the holodeck, portraying Ebenezer Scrooge, engaging in a philosophical discussion with Picard about method acting and the pursuit of emotional awareness, specifically fear. Data expresses his desire to understand human emotions by performing them, believing it will bring him closer to true humanity. Picard offers encouragement, noting Data's independent interpretation as a step forward. This introspective moment is abruptly interrupted by an emergency transmission from Ventax Two. Dr. Howard Clark, director of the science station, reports widespread chaos, mass hysteria, and a planet-wide belief that their world is ending. The signal is unstable, plagued by static and the sounds of a distant mob, highlighting the urgency and severity of the situation. Communication is lost, leaving Picard and the crew with an incomplete, alarming picture of the crisis unfolding on Ventax Two, setting the stage for their immediate intervention and the central mystery of Ardra's return.

Act 1

Act One begins with the Enterprise arriving in orbit around Ventax Two, attempting to re-establish contact with the science station. The situation on the planet has severely deteriorated, with the station under siege by a frantic mob. Captain Picard orders Dr. Clark beamed aboard, narrowly rescuing him as the station's door collapses. In Picard's ready room, Dr. Clark explains Ventax Two's history: an ancient, technologically advanced society that reverted to an agrarian lifestyle a millennium ago, now gripped by a legend. He reveals that Ardra, a figure from their past, is believed to be the devil returning to enslave the population after a thousand-year contract of peace. Picard learns that Ventaxian leader Acost Jared is obsessed with Ardra's return, citing prophecies of geological tremors and visions, which have reportedly occurred. Despite Worf's warnings about the danger, Picard decides to beam down to the planet with Data, Worf, and Troi to investigate and secure the release of Federation hostages. Upon their arrival in the Atheneum, a significant tremor strikes, and a blinding light appears, fading to reveal Ardra, a stunning woman who declares, 'Time's up,' solidifying the Ventaxians' fears and directly confronting Picard.

Act 2

Act Two sees Ardra asserting her dominion over Ventax Two, treating the Ventaxians as her property and demanding an accounting of their accumulated resources. She dismisses their cowering and ancient customs, revealing a pragmatic, almost business-like demeanor. Picard immediately challenges her, questioning her identity and intentions, but Ardra responds with playful taunts and displays of seemingly supernatural power, such as conjuring a scroll and briefly transforming into the Klingon figure Fek'lhr. Picard remains skeptical, suspecting technological trickery, and demands to see the ancient contract. Data meticulously examines the scrolls and confirms the contract's existence and its legally binding terms. Ardra, in a show of authority, orders the release of the Federation hostages, further demonstrating her control. Back on the Enterprise, Picard and his crew analyze Ardra's 'powers,' concluding they are likely illusions created by advanced technology, such as transporters, holographic projections, and low-frequency tractor beams. However, Ardra escalates the conflict by infiltrating the Enterprise bridge, demonstrating a forcefield against Worf and appearing at the Ops station in an Ensign's uniform. Data then delivers a devastating report: the contract's language can be interpreted to grant Ardra ownership of anything on or in orbit around Ventax Two, including the Enterprise itself, leaving Picard in a precarious and deeply compromised position.

Act 3

In Act Three, Captain Picard, determined to expose Ardra as a fraud, delves into the study of confidence games, believing her to be a master con artist. He theorizes that the original 'Ardra contract' may have been a clever motivational tool used by a past Ventaxian leader to inspire societal change, rather than a genuine pact with a supernatural entity. Data, while acknowledging the Ventaxians' thousand years of peace, points out that the spirits in Scrooge's story were real, subtly questioning Picard's certainty. Ardra then invades Picard's private quarters, taunting him with seductive illusions, transforming into various 'ideal women,' including a version of Troi, and attempting to exploit his desires. Picard vehemently rejects her advances, calling her 'shallow and pathetic.' In retaliation, Ardra transports Picard, still in his bedclothes, to the science station on Ventax Two. Worf reports that the Enterprise transporters are malfunctioning due to interference, preventing Picard's immediate return. Data, meanwhile, discovers an obscure Ventaxian legal precedent for arbitration involving an alien claimant, offering Picard a potential loophole. As Data pilots a shuttle to retrieve Picard, the Enterprise mysteriously vanishes from orbit, leaving the shuttle isolated in space and Picard without his ship, marking a significant and alarming setback.

Act 4

Act Four opens with Picard and Data stranded on Ventax Two, unable to locate the vanished Enterprise. Data reports the ship is nowhere within a lightyear, but Geordi detects a sudden spike in Z particle readings, suggesting a hidden power source linked to the disappearance. Ardra appears, gloating over the Enterprise's absence, but Picard, seizing on Data's legal discovery, challenges her to an arbitration, accusing her of being a fraud. Ardra initially resists, claiming she has nothing to gain, but Picard offers the location of the Zaterl Emerald as an incentive. Ardra rejects the jewel, instead demanding Picard himself as her prize: his heart, mind, and soul, freely given. Picard, despite the extreme personal cost, agrees to her terms. Ardra chooses Data as the arbiter, citing his impartiality as an android, a choice Picard reluctantly accepts, recognizing Data's inability to feel fear makes him uniquely suited to resist Ardra's intimidation. The arbitration begins, with Ardra presenting historical evidence and Jared's testimony to support her claim, which Data, adhering strictly to Ventaxian law, largely upholds, overruling Picard's objections. Ardra then directly questions Picard, demonstrating her 'powers'—a tremor, making Picard disappear and reappear, and transforming into a demonic figure—leaving Picard unable to explain them. Ardra rests her case, confident in her victory, as Picard faces overwhelming odds.

Act 5

Act Five brings the climax and resolution of the conflict. Geordi and Dr. Clark successfully trace the Z particle source to a cloaked ship in orbit, confirming Picard's suspicion of technological deception. In the arbitration, Picard skillfully cross-examines Jared, revealing that the Ventaxians achieved their peace and prosperity through their own hard work, courage, and societal reforms, not through Ardra's direct intervention. Ardra attempts to object, but Data allows Picard to continue, leading Jared to admit that Ardra had left Ventax Two before the environmental reforms even began. With Geordi's timely arrival, Picard calls for a recess and learns about the cloaked ship and that the Enterprise is merely cloaked and its systems jammed. Picard, now armed with the truth, returns to the arbitration. He dramatically demonstrates Ardra's 'magic' himself, replicating her tremors, disappearances, and transformations (including becoming Fek'lhr) with the Enterprise crew's assistance, exposing them as technologically based illusions. Picard reveals Ardra's cloaked ship, her centuries-old implant technology for activating illusions, and her history of using twenty-three aliases to deceive innocent people for petty schemes. Ardra, her deception exposed, attempts to withdraw and release the Ventaxians from their contract, but Jared, now empowered, has her apprehended by sentries. Data officially dissolves the contract, and Picard reflects that the Ventaxians saved themselves, long ago. Ardra is led away, defeated, but not without a final, taunting remark to Picard.
