Night Terrors

When the Enterprise investigates a derelict ship whose crew mysteriously murdered each other, the crew finds themselves trapped in a Tyken's Rift where they are deprived of REM sleep, leading to madness and terror as they try to solve the mystery and escape.

The USS Enterprise, under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, investigates the USS Brattain, a Federation science vessel that disappeared after sending a distress call. They find the Brattain adrift near a binary star system. Upon entering the ship, the crew discovers the entire crew dead, seemingly having killed each other in a frenzy of violence. Only one survivor remains: a Betazoid science advisor named Andrus Hagan, who is in a catatonic state. Counselor Deanna Troi attempts to make contact with his mind, and gleans only fragmented phrases filled with terror.

As the Enterprise attempts to unravel the mystery, they become trapped in a Tyken's Rift, a spatial anomaly that drains energy. Geordi La Forge and Data try to restart the Brattain's engines without success. Beverly Crusher's autopsies reveal the crew of the Brattain killed each other, and Captain Zaheva's logs speak of paranoia and mutiny. Troi experiences a terrifying nightmare of a voice calling out about "eyes in the dark" and "one moon circling."

Soon, members of the Enterprise crew begin to exhibit strange behavior. Ensign Rager forgets how to enter coordinates, O'Brien becomes irrationally jealous of Keiko, and crew members report hallucinations and strange occurrences. Picard, Beverly, and Troi realize that the events on the Brattain are being mirrored on the Enterprise -- the crew is slowly losing their minds. Data determines that the Tyken's Rift is preventing the ship's energy from functioning normally. Beverly discovers that the crew is suffering from REM sleep deprivation.

As the crew descends further into madness, Worf nearly commits suicide, plagued by fear. Picard experiences hallucinations in a turbolift, and Riker finds his bed filled with snakes. Troi, through her Betazoid abilities, remains the only one who can dream, but her dreams are filled with terrifying messages. Beverly and Data work to find a solution, while Picard relies on Data to make critical decisions, as he himself is suffering from the effects of sleep deprivation.

Troi realizes that her nightmares are not just dreams, but a telepathic message from another ship trapped on the other side of the Tyken's Rift. The beings are calling for help. Data discovers that a concentrated burst of energy might disrupt the Tyken's Rift. Communicating through dreams, Troi exchanges information that reveals that they must find a suitable means of combining available resources, and the call for “one moon circling” is finally translated to Hydrogen. The Enterprise and the other ship work together to combine hydrogen and a volatile substance to create an explosion. The Enterprise ejects hydrogen into the Rift near the other vessel. Troi, through a final contact, transmits the signal ‘now’ at the critical moment. United in purpose, the aliens achieve an explosion which frees both ships from the Tyken's Rift. With the Enterprise freed, life support returns, and Data orders a return to Starbase and mandates rest for the crew.

Act 1

The Enterprise locates the USS Brattain, a missing science vessel, adrift near a binary star system. A landing party beams aboard, discovering the entire crew dead, seemingly having killed each other in a violent frenzy. The only survivor, a Betazoid science advisor named Andrus Hagan, is found in a profound catatonic state, only able to utter fragmented, terrifying phrases. Dr. Beverly Crusher's autopsies confirm the crew's self-destruction, with no external cause, and Captain Zaheva's logs reveal a descent into paranoia and mutiny, made after the ship became stranded. Meanwhile, attempts by Geordi La Forge and Data to restart the Brattain's engines prove futile, indicating an unseen problem preventing propulsion. Counselor Deanna Troi experiences a vivid and terrifying nightmare, hearing a disembodied voice speak of 'eyes in the dark' and 'one moon circles.' This initial dream serves as the first direct, though cryptic, communication from the unknown threat, setting the stage for the psychological and physical peril that will soon engulf the Enterprise crew. The act establishes the central mystery of what happened on the Brattain and introduces the first unsettling signs that the Enterprise might be facing a similar fate.

Act 2

The Enterprise prepares to tow the Brattain, but unsettling incidents begin to plague the crew, signaling a mirroring of the previous ship's fate. Ensign Peeples experiences vivid auditory hallucinations on the Brattain, hearing phantom sounds of someone alive on board, causing him alarm and confusion. Back on the Enterprise, Chief O'Brien exhibits uncharacteristic and irrational jealousy towards his wife, Keiko, accusing her of infidelity without logical basis, highlighting a severe emotional imbalance. Other crew members report strange occurrences and hallucinations, with Chief Gillespie relaying stories of phantom figures and inexplicable events, indicating a widespread psychological deterioration across the vessel. Ensign Rager, at the Conn, suddenly suffers a severe cognitive failure, unable to input basic navigation coordinates, underscoring the rapid decline in mental faculties. The situation culminates dramatically when the Enterprise unexpectedly loses all engine power, becoming adrift and helpless, mirroring the exact state of the Brattain. Picard, Beverly, and Troi make the chilling realization that the events on the Brattain are not merely being investigated, but are actively being mirrored on their own ship. The crew is slowly, inexorably, losing their minds, and the Enterprise is now trapped in the same mysterious predicament as the ill-fated science vessel, with no apparent means of escape or understanding of the underlying cause. The physical and mental integrity of the crew and ship are now directly under threat, escalating the stakes significantly.

Act 3

Data identifies the cause of their physical entrapment: the Enterprise is caught in a Tyken's Rift, a rare spatial anomaly that drains all energy, rendering propulsion systems useless. He explains that escaping such a rift typically requires a massive, concentrated energy release, which the Enterprise currently lacks the means to produce, as even photon torpedoes would be insufficient. Simultaneously, the psychological toll on the crew intensifies. Picard and Riker both admit to experiencing vivid hallucinations; Picard sees the turbolift ceiling descending to crush him, while Riker finds his bed filled with snakes. Profoundly shaken by his own vulnerability and the frightening prospect of losing control of his mind, Captain Picard makes the difficult decision to delegate critical decision-making authority to Data, recognizing that his own cognitive faculties are compromised. Dr. Beverly Crusher, after further investigation, makes a breakthrough discovery: the crew is suffering from severe REM sleep deprivation, which is causing the cognitive decline, paranoia, and hallucinations. She warns Picard that without a solution, the entire crew is destined to descend into irreversible madness, a grim prognosis that underscores the dire stakes.

Act 4

The crew's mental state continues to deteriorate rapidly, pushing them to the brink. Counselor Troi, despite her own exhaustion, persists in trying to communicate with Andrus Hagan, who offers more fragmented, yet still cryptic, clues about 'double' and 'twin.' In Ten-Forward, the pervasive fear and paranoia ignite near-mutiny, with Chief Gillespie attempting to rally crew members to confront Picard, only to be forcefully, though non-lethally, subdued by Guinan wielding a powerful alien weapon. Data and Geordi attempt their first major escape strategy, channeling all available power into the main deflector dish for a concentrated energy burst, but the effort fails spectacularly, the energy simply absorbed by the Tyken's Rift. This setback plunges the crew into deeper despair, as Data confirms further attempts risk life support. The psychological breakdown reaches a critical point when Lieutenant Worf, overwhelmed by fear and a sense of lost warrior pride, attempts suicide with a Klingon dagger. Troi, sensing his distress, intervenes just in time, guiding him to articulate his profound fear and preventing a tragic loss. This act highlights the extreme mental and emotional toll on the crew and the failure of their initial, desperate attempts to escape.

Act 5

With Data now acting Captain, the Enterprise faces imminent collapse as life support systems falter and many crew members are incapacitated. Troi experiences a breakthrough, realizing that Hagan's phrases and her nightmares are not random dreams but a telepathic distress call from another ship trapped on the opposite side of the Tyken's Rift. Data corroborates the plausibility of a second vessel. Troi proposes 'directed dreaming' to communicate with these beings, a method that allows her to consciously control her dreams and transmit information. Through this unique telepathic channel, Troi and Data decipher the recurring phrase 'one moon circles' as a reference to hydrogen. They formulate a desperate plan: the Enterprise will eject a stream of hydrogen into the Rift, and the other ship, if they possess a volatile substance, will detonate it simultaneously. Data orders all non-essential personnel to shelter areas, leading to a final, tense confrontation in Ten-Forward where Guinan again prevents a panicked stampede with a show of force. As Troi enters REM sleep and telepathically transmits the crucial signal 'Now!' at the precise moment the Enterprise releases hydrogen, a massive explosion erupts within the Rift, successfully freeing both ships. Life support is restored, and Data, in his final act as Acting Captain, orders a return to Starbase and mandates rest for the exhausted crew, bringing a harrowing ordeal to a close.
