The Host

When Ambassador Odan, a key mediator, faces a life-threatening crisis, Doctor Crusher uncovers his true nature as a Trill symbiont, forcing her to confront her feelings and make an impossible choice to save him and prevent a devastating war.

The Enterprise is tasked with mediating a conflict between the two moons of Peliar Zel. Doctor Beverly Crusher finds herself falling deeply in love with the Trill Ambassador Odan, a skilled negotiator. Their burgeoning romance is interrupted when an assassination attempt on Odan leaves him gravely injured. During surgery, Beverly discovers Odan's shocking secret: he is a symbiont, a non-corporeal life form that inhabits a host body. With his current host dying, Odan needs a new one to survive and complete his mission of peace.

The Trill are contacted, but the journey to the Enterprise will take too long; Odan's symbiont will die before they arrive. Desperate to save Odan and prevent war, Commander Riker volunteers to become Odan's temporary host, despite the risks. The symbiont transfer is successful, but Riker struggles to maintain his own identity as Odan's persona begins to surface. Beverly is torn between her feelings for Odan and her friendship with Riker; her attraction shifts to Riker's body once inhabited by Odan, a painful dilemma for both her and Riker.

As Odan (in Riker's body) attempts to negotiate a peace treaty between the warring moons, Riker's body begins to reject the symbiont, causing him great pain and weakening him. Despite his deteriorating condition, Odan successfully brokers a fragile agreement. Knowing Riker will die if he remains a host much longer, Odan insists on being removed from Riker's body, even if it means his own demise, as a matter of trust and professional ethics to Starfleet.

The Trill ship carrying Odan's new host finally arrives, revealing the new host to be a woman named Kareel. Beverly successfully transfers the symbiont to Kareel, saving Odan's life. However, Beverly realizes she cannot continue a relationship with Odan, as the constant changes in host bodies create too much uncertainty. Odan, now in Kareel's body, understands Beverly's decision, and they share a final, poignant goodbye, acknowledging their love but recognizing the impossibility of their future together. The Enterprise continues along its journey, and Beverly moves on wiser, but heartbroken, from the affair.

Act 1

The act opens with Doctor Beverly Crusher and Ambassador Odan sharing a passionate, secret romance, establishing their deep connection amidst the Enterprise's mission to mediate a conflict on Peliar Zel. Odan's subtle evasiveness with Data and his feigned illness hint at a hidden aspect of his being. The narrative then introduces the escalating political crisis between the Alpha and Beta moons, driven by an energy dispute with severe environmental and health consequences, underscoring the critical importance of Odan's diplomatic mission. Counselor Troi's intuitive sense of "fluctuations" from Odan and her gentle questioning of Beverly's knowledge of him foreshadow an impending revelation. Beverly, deeply in love, dismisses these subtle warnings. The act culminates in a dramatic assassination attempt on Odan's shuttle, leaving him gravely injured. During emergency surgery, Beverly discovers the shocking truth: Odan is not merely a man but a Trill symbiont, a non-corporeal being inhabiting a host body, and his current host is dying. This revelation shatters Beverly's understanding of her lover and introduces the central, high-stakes conflict.

Act 2

Following the shocking revelation of Odan's true nature, Act Two focuses on the desperate measures to save the symbiont and the diplomatic mission. Odan explains the Trill's joined species biology and urgently requests a new host, which is forty hours away, far exceeding his symbiont's survival window in stasis. The Enterprise crew, including Picard, Riker, and Troi, grapples with this unprecedented biological and ethical dilemma, understanding Odan's critical role in preventing war on Peliar Zel. Commander Riker, recognizing the dire stakes, bravely volunteers to become Odan's temporary human host, despite Beverly's warnings about the unknown risks and lack of precedent for a human host. Beverly, facing immense medical and ethical challenges, proceeds with the experimental implantation. The surgery is fraught with tension as Riker endures extreme pain and his body shows signs of rejection, pushing Beverly to her medical limits. Through quick thinking and intervention, Beverly stabilizes Riker, and the symbiont successfully assimilates. The act concludes with a powerful moment of transformation: Riker awakens, but it is Odan's persona that emerges, evident in his familiar gesture of kissing Beverly's wrist, leaving Beverly in a state of profound realization and emotional turmoil, as her lover now inhabits her friend's body.

Act 3

Act Three delves into the complex emotional and psychological fallout of Odan's transfer into Riker's body. Riker, now inhabited by Odan, confidently asserts his diplomatic identity to Governor Leka, though his physical frailty begins to manifest. Beverly, tasked with his medical care, struggles to maintain professional detachment, deeply uncomfortable with the intimacy of her lover's essence residing in her friend's form. Their private conversation highlights Beverly's anguish over Odan's initial deception and her inability to reconcile her feelings for Odan with Riker's familiar appearance. Odan, in turn, expresses genuine puzzlement at her reaction, as his nature is simply "what I am," and reaffirms his unwavering love, offering to suppress it if it causes her pain. The Enterprise crew also grapples with the new reality, with Data directly questioning the nature of the symbiotic joining. Riker (Odan) reveals that, unlike previous hosts, Will Riker's personality is unexpectedly "here with me," adding another layer of complexity and unease for his friends. A poignant scene unfolds in Ten-Forward as Beverly confides in Troi, articulating her profound confusion and grief, questioning the nature of her love and her attraction to Odan in Riker's "brotherly" body. Troi, through a personal anecdote, encourages Beverly to embrace the love she feels, regardless of the vessel. The act culminates in Beverly's reluctant acceptance of her continued attraction to Odan, now in Riker's body, as she feels an undeniable "pull" between them, setting the stage for a deeper, more complicated romantic entanglement.

Act 4

Act Four intensifies the diplomatic and personal stakes, pushing Odan (in Riker's body) to the brink while Beverly grapples with her rekindled, complicated feelings. Odan, increasingly ill and in pain from the host body's rejection, insists on proceeding with the crucial peace negotiations despite Picard's concerns about his deteriorating condition. He demonstrates extraordinary diplomatic prowess by recalling intimate, secret details of the representatives' past, earning the trust of Lathal Bine and securing a tentative agreement from Kalin Trose. However, the immense effort takes a severe physical toll, and Odan collapses, desperately calling for Beverly's help. In Sickbay, Beverly confirms the onset of classic rejection syndrome, with no long-term medical solution, only temporary immunosuppressants. The emotional tension between Beverly and Odan (in Riker's body) escalates as he reaches for her, and she almost succumbs to the intimacy before pulling back, conflicted by Riker's identity and her own ethical boundaries. Picard observes their complex dynamic, acknowledging the "awkward situation." Odan, reflecting on his life's mission to solve insoluble problems, recognizes his own personal dilemma with Beverly has no easy answer. Later that night, Odan's persona emerges more strongly, as he paces agitatedly and attempts to order his native drink. Beverly, drawn by an unseen force and reflecting on the rose Odan gave her, comes to his quarters. After a tense, emotionally charged exchange, where Odan explicitly states his desire for her and offers her a final chance to leave, Beverly makes a definitive choice, declaring "I'm not leaving." They share a passionate kiss, signifying her acceptance of Odan in Riker's form and her surrender to their complicated love.

Act 5

Act Five brings the narrative to its emotional and diplomatic climax, forcing impossible choices and leading to a bittersweet resolution. With war imminent and the peace talks reaching their final stage, Riker (Odan) is critically ill, his body rapidly deteriorating from rejection. He makes a profound, ethical decision: he refuses further medication, prioritizing Riker's life over his own, and demands to be removed from Riker's body immediately after the mediation, even if it means his own demise before the new host arrives. Beverly, stunned and heartbroken, ultimately agrees to this selfless act, acknowledging the immense sacrifice. Picard, witnessing the depth of their bond and Beverly's anguish, offers her profound personal comfort, breaking his professional demeanor. The Trill host ship is delayed, intensifying the race against time. Despite his agonizing pain, Odan successfully brokers a fragile peace treaty between the warring moons, collapsing the moment he exits the Observation Lounge. Beverly, seeing Riker's critical state, prepares for the emergency removal of the symbiont, hoping to save Riker's life and that the new host will arrive in time. The new host finally arrives, revealed to be a beautiful woman named Kareel, further challenging Beverly's understanding of Odan's identity. Beverly successfully transfers Odan to Kareel. In a final, poignant conversation, Kareel (now Odan) reaffirms his love for Beverly, but Beverly, exhausted by the constant change and the uncertainty of future hosts, tearfully explains she cannot continue the relationship. Odan, in Kareel's body, understands her human limitations, and they share a final, loving goodbye, acknowledging their bond while accepting the impossibility of their future. The Enterprise departs, leaving Beverly heartbroken but wiser.
