The Outcast

When Commander Riker investigates the disappearance of a shuttlecraft with a genderless J'naii pilot named Soren, he falls in love with Soren, who admits to feeling like a woman, a forbidden desire on their planet, and Riker must help them.

The Enterprise is contacted by the androgynous J'naii to investigate the disappearance of a shuttlecraft. Riker teams up with Soren, a J'naii specialist, to understand the anomaly, null space, that caused the disappearance. They work closely together, and Riker is intrigued by Soren. While mapping the null space in a shuttle, Soren starts asking Riker personal questions about gender and sexuality. An accident injures Soren, and during treatment, Beverly observes Soren's subtle attraction to Riker. Later, Soren reveals to Riker that they identify as female, a suppressed and forbidden concept on their planet where gender is considered primitive. Soren recounts a story of a student who was cruelly punished for being different. Riker is sympathetic, and they share a kiss in the woods after a formal gathering. Troi affirms her friendship with Riker, understanding his connection with Soren.

Krite, another J'naii, discovers Riker and Soren's relationship and reports Soren. During a hearing, Riker attempts to take the blame, but Soren bravely declares their identity as female and condemns their society's intolerance. The J'naii authorities deem Soren sick and sentence them to undergo psychotectic treatment to eliminate all elements of gender. Riker expresses his anguish to Picard, who warns him against violating the Prime Directive. Undeterred, Riker enlists Worf's help to rescue Soren. They intercept Soren, but Soren reveals to Riker that they have already undergone the treatment and no longer have feelings for them. Devastated, Riker returns to the Enterprise. Picard orders a course set for the Phelan system, acknowledging the end of Riker's involvement with the J'naii, and Riker, heartbroken, complies.

Act 1

The Enterprise responds to a J'naii request to investigate a missing shuttle. The J'naii, a genderless species, introduce Soren and Krite. Data detects an unusual neutrino emission, and a Starfleet probe vanishes into "null space," a theoretical anomaly. Commander Riker collaborates closely with Soren, a J'naii specialist, to understand and map this dangerous phenomenon. Their professional interactions quickly develop an easy familiarity, and Riker is intrigued by Soren's directness and wit. Soren, demonstrating exceptional piloting skills, volunteers to pilot the rescue shuttle, leading Riker to propose they team up. During a casual meal, Soren probes Riker about human gender and sexuality, expressing curiosity about the differences between males and females. Her questions become increasingly personal, culminating in a subtly seductive look and tone as she questions the "complexity" of sexes. Krite's sudden arrival interrupts this moment, and Soren immediately reverts to a formal, detached demeanor, leaving Riker puzzled by her sudden transformation and the underlying tension. This act establishes the central mystery of the null space, introduces the cultural conflict around gender, and initiates the burgeoning, complex relationship between Riker and Soren.

Act 2

Riker and Soren embark on their mission to chart the null space, establishing an efficient, collaborative rhythm in the shuttle. Soren continues her line of deeply personal questioning, inquiring about human sexual organs and mating practices. Riker, initially uncomfortable, explains the human experience of intimacy and pleasure in sexual acts, contrasting it with the J'naii method of incubating fetuses. Soren then provocatively asks about the sexual compatibility between humans and J'naii, revealing her people's view of gender as "primitive" and "less evolved." A sudden shuttle accident injures Soren, forcing their return to the Enterprise. In Sickbay, Doctor Crusher treats Soren and observes a subtle, unmistakable attraction Soren harbors for Riker. Soren further questions Beverly about what it means to be female, noting human customs of self-decoration to attract men. Later, alone with Riker in the shuttle, Soren takes a profound risk, confessing her true identity: she is one of the rare J'naii born with a strong inclination towards being female, a forbidden "throwback" on her planet. She recounts a chilling story of a student cruelly punished and "cured" for exhibiting gendered preferences, conveying the immense fear and secrecy under which she lives. Soren touches Riker's face, expressing her desire for honesty with him, and asks him to consider her revelation.

Act 3

Riker and Soren prepare for the rescue mission, maintaining a formal distance despite their shared secret. Geordi confirms the energy buffer is installed, but warns of critical power drain within the null space. They launch, enter the null space, and locate the unconscious J'naii shuttle crew. The transporter fails to beam them out due to the null space's interference, and power reserves plummet. Facing imminent death, Riker makes a desperate decision: he reroutes all remaining energy from the propulsion and navigation systems to the transporter for one final attempt, knowing it will cause the shuttle to explode. This high-stakes gamble succeeds, and Riker, Soren, and the rescued J'naii materialize safely in Sickbay. Krite, grateful for the rescue, invites the Enterprise crew to a formal gathering, during which he observes a lingering, formal exchange between Riker and Soren. Later, in a secluded garden, Soren approaches Riker. They maintain polite formality, but the tension between them is palpable. Soren leads Riker into the woods, ostensibly to show him plant life. Away from prying eyes, their suppressed emotions erupt; Riker takes Soren's arm, and they share a deep, passionate kiss, solidifying their romantic connection.

Act 4

Riker confides in Deanna Troi about his feelings for Soren, seeking her counsel. Troi acknowledges the evolving nature of relationships but assures Riker of their enduring friendship. Riker and Soren continue their professional collaboration, maintaining a facade of formality, but Krite observes their subtle interactions with suspicion. Riker attempts to arrange a private dinner with Soren, but before they can meet, Krite intercepts Riker, revealing that Soren has been taken into custody. Krite's smugness and refusal to disclose Soren's location provoke Riker. Riker storms into the J'naii Civic Chamber, interrupting Soren's hearing before a panel of judges, including Noor. To protect Soren, Riker falsely claims responsibility for their relationship, asserting he pursued her and that she rejected him, thus nothing "happened." However, Soren bravely rejects Riker's lie. She rises and, with profound courage and conviction, declares her identity as female, asserting she was born that way and is not "sick" or in need of a "cure." She passionately condemns her society's intolerance, demanding understanding and compassion for those like her, and challenges their right to dictate how people love.

Act 5

Following Soren's defiant declaration, Noor dismisses her identity as a "perversion" and sentences her to psychotectic treatment, a procedure designed to eliminate all elements of gender. Riker desperately attempts to offer Soren asylum on the Enterprise, arguing it would solve the J'naii's "problem" and remove her influence, but Noor gently, yet firmly, refuses. Noor asserts that J'naii society is "enlightened" and that they are merely "curing" a sick citizen for her own happiness. Soren is taken away, her eyes wide with fear. Riker transports back to the Enterprise, expressing his anguish to Picard. Picard, while sympathetic, warns Riker against violating the Prime Directive, emphasizing the potential career-ending consequences. Despite Picard's warning, Riker remains resolute, determined to rescue Soren. Worf, demonstrating unwavering loyalty, volunteers to accompany Riker on his unsanctioned mission. Dressed in dark clothing, Riker and Worf covertly intercept Soren and her guards. Riker pulls Soren into the woods, intent on escaping, but Soren, with a chilling detachment, reveals she has already undergone the psychotectic treatment. She states her past feelings were a "mistake" and questions why she would want to revert to her former self. Riker declares his love, but Soren regards him without emotion, unable to recall her past affection, and then leaves. Devastated, Riker returns to the Enterprise. Picard, acknowledging the end of Riker's involvement with the J'naii, orders a course set for the Phelan system, and a heartbroken Riker complies.
