Imaginary Friend

When a nebula-dwelling energy being infiltrates the Enterprise and manifests as Clara Sutter's imaginary friend, Isabella, Captain Picard must convince the alien that humanity's protective nature isn't cruelty before it drains the ship's energy.

The Enterprise arrives at the FGC-four-seven nebula, and a point of light enters the ship. Meanwhile, Counselor Troi holds a session with Clara Sutter, a young girl who has an imaginary friend named Isabella. Troi assures Clara's concerned father, Daniel, that imaginary friends are normal. The point of light travels around the ship, interacting with various objects. In the arboretum, it merges with a flower, creating a duplicate, and then enters Clara's head. Suddenly, Isabella materializes as a real girl who resembles Clara’s description. Clara is overjoyed, but a change occurs within Isabella that slowly becomes known.

Clara and Isabella begin to spend time together, but Isabella insists on exploring the ship, even against Clara's better judgment. They visit Engineering, disrupting the work being done by Geordi, Data, and Daniel Sutter. The ship experiences strange disturbances, including a drop in forward velocity that returns to normal just as mysteriously.

Picard, Riker, Data, and Geordi discuss the strange happenings and decide to continue investigating the nebula. Clara and Isabella continue their explorations, with Isabella becoming increasingly serious and demanding. She is shown to dislike adults and engineers a situation that forces Clara to defend the people and rules she knows.

Data and Guinan observe the nebula in Ten Forward, discussing the human tendency to find patterns in randomness. Clara enters, bringing Isabella with her. Guinan is the first adult that does not dismiss Isabella outright. Troi arrives and takes Clara for a walk, then explains to Sutter that she is growing concerned by Isabella's influence. Troi tries to suggest that Clara play with “real” friends instead. After Troi leaves, Isabella manipulates Clara, attempting to sway her back to her side. Troi then invites Clara to join a ceramics class. Angered by Clara's departure, Isabella experiences a surge of rage, her eyes glowing red.

As the Enterprise moves deeper into the nebula, the ship begins to tremble. Geordi and Sutter discover that the ship is running into strands of plasma that exist due to the unique nature of the nebula. Picard orders them to illuminate any additional strands, resulting in the discovery of an incredible latticework of energy. Troi talks to Guinan about her concerns regarding Clara and Isabella. Again, Isabella's anger flares, and events start happening to create conflict and discord. Clara attempts to join the children in their art projects, but Isabella ruins the effort and lashes out at Clara. Frightened and confused, Clara runs to the arboretum, where a now enraged Isabella confronts her, revealing her true alien nature and threatening the safety of the ship.

Troi and Susanna return to the Sutter’s quarters. There they seek the young girl out, but Isabella is waiting behind them and attacks Troi with a strand of energy. Troi is knocked unconscious. Worf confirms he saw Isabella near Engineering days before, and a security alert is raised. After Clara explains that Isabella's feelings were hurt, Picard seeks Isabella out in the arboretum. She appears and explains she was determining whether the crew were a threat. Picard and Isabella debate humanity’s good and ill will. Picard makes a case that the crew aren’t intentionally malicious, but attempting to create safe boundaries for all, and Isabella releases the Enterprise from the influence of the energy strands. Clara and Isabella say goodbye. In the end, the Enterprise exits the nebula, and the crew continues on its mission.

Act 1

Clara Sutter, a seven-year-old girl, maintains an imaginary friend named Isabella, a detail her concerned father, Daniel, discusses with Counselor Troi. Troi reassures Daniel that such imaginary play is normal, suggesting it might be a coping mechanism for Clara's frequent moves between starships. Concurrently, the Enterprise arrives at the FGC-four-seven nebula, and an energy being in the form of a tiny point of light infiltrates the ship. This light explores various sections, observing crew members like Data, Geordi, Beverly, and Ogawa, before merging with a flower in the arboretum, creating a duplicate. The light then enters Clara's head, and Isabella materializes as a real girl, exactly as Clara described her, albeit with an unsettling, expressionless demeanor. Isabella immediately displays a demanding and persuasive nature, leading Clara to explore the ship against rules, even disrupting Engineering. Simultaneously, the Enterprise experiences unexplained impacts and drops in forward velocity, which mysteriously correct themselves, baffling the crew. This act establishes the dual narrative threads: the growing influence of the alien Isabella on Clara and the mysterious, unsettling phenomena affecting the ship, hinting at a deeper connection between the two. The act concludes with Isabella's casual acknowledgment of her actions, further cementing her manipulative nature and the mystery surrounding her true purpose.

Act 2

Following the initial unexplained disturbances, the Enterprise command staff, including Picard, Riker, Data, and Geordi, decide to continue their investigation into the FGC-four-seven nebula. Picard, driven by scientific curiosity, opts to collect samples despite the inherent risks, signifying a commitment to understanding the unknown. Meanwhile, Isabella's influence over Clara deepens, revealing her increasingly serious and manipulative personality. She tests Clara's loyalty, expressing a clear disdain for adults and their rules, which she perceives as restrictive. A pivotal interaction occurs in Ten Forward, where Guinan, unlike other adults, acknowledges Isabella's presence without dismissal, offering Clara a rare moment of adult validation and understanding. Guinan shares her own experience with an imaginary friend, a Tarcassian razor beast, subtly hinting at the enduring nature of such companions. However, Counselor Troi, concerned by Isabella's negative influence and Clara's inappropriate behavior, attempts to gently separate Clara from her imaginary friend by encouraging her to make 'real' friends and inviting her to a ceramics class. This intervention provokes a significant shift in Isabella; angered by Clara's decision to leave her, Isabella's eyes glow a deep red, signaling a surge of alien rage and the emergence of a more sinister, hostile aspect of her true nature, escalating the internal threat to Clara.

Act 3

As the Enterprise ventures deeper into the FGC-four-seven nebula, the ship experiences increasingly severe tremors and significant drops in forward velocity, indicating a worsening external threat. Geordi and Sutter, through their diligent investigation, discover the cause: the ship is running into highly cohesive plasma strands. By illuminating these strands, they reveal an incredible, complex latticework of energy surrounding the ship, confirming a pervasive, physical obstacle. Concurrently, Isabella's alien rage, first glimpsed at the end of Act Two, intensifies and manifests as deliberate acts of sabotage and discord. She invisibly spills Troi's hot chocolate, disrupting her work, and then, more dramatically, destroys Alexander's ceramic cup at the Daycare Center, making it appear as if Clara is responsible. This act directly creates conflict between Clara and Alexander, leading to Alexander accusing Clara of lying and causing Clara to flee in distress. Frightened and confused, Clara retreats to the arboretum, where an enraged Isabella confronts her. During this confrontation, Isabella sheds her guise of a friendly imaginary companion, revealing her menacing true alien persona with glowing red eyes and explicitly threatening Clara and the entire ship, stating that 'when the others come... you can die along with everyone else.' This climactic moment in the act fully exposes Isabella's hostile intent and the immediate danger she poses.

Act 4

The Enterprise continues its perilous journey through the nebula, with the viewscreen displaying an increasingly dense latticework of energy strands. The ship endures violent tremors, and its shields begin to weaken significantly under the strain, highlighting the escalating external crisis. Meanwhile, Counselor Troi grapples with her professional approach to Clara's situation. In Ten Forward, she discusses the nature of imaginary friends with Guinan, who shares a personal anecdote about her own Tarcassian razor beast, offering Troi a profound insight into the enduring and protective role such companions can play in a child's life, even into adulthood. This conversation prompts Troi to question her earlier attempts to 'wean' Clara from Isabella. However, this moment of reflection is interrupted when Sutter urgently summons Troi, revealing Clara's profound terror of Isabella and her claims that 'the others' are coming to kill everyone. Despite her initial skepticism regarding Clara's 'fantasies,' Troi, concerned by Clara's conviction and fear, agrees to search Clara's room with her. During their meticulous search, Isabella materializes behind Clara, confirming her physical presence. Before Troi can react, Isabella attacks her with a strand of red energy, knocking the counselor unconscious. This shocking event unequivocally confirms Isabella's reality, her hostile capabilities, and the immediate physical danger she poses to the crew, shifting the narrative from psychological concern to an overt alien threat.

Act 5

In Sickbay, a weakened but conscious Troi recounts her attack, confirming Isabella's physical presence and the energy-draining nature of the assault. Picard, now fully aware of the alien entity and Clara's earlier warnings of 'others' coming, raises a security alert. Clara, displaying bravery despite her fear, explains to Picard that Isabella's hostile actions stem from feeling hurt and abandoned when Clara stopped paying attention to her. This revelation prompts Picard to seek out Isabella in the arboretum, aiming to understand her motivations. Isabella materializes, revealing her purpose: to assess humanity as a threat and to harvest the Enterprise's energy, which she considers 'purer' than her species' normal sources. She coldly condemns humanity as 'cruel, uncaring creatures' based on her observation of how adults restricted Clara. Picard counters, arguing that human rules and boundaries, though seemingly restrictive from a child's perspective, are born of a deep, protective love for their young, ensuring their safety and guiding their development. He emphasizes the 'continuity of the Human species' through this protective instinct. As the ship endures critical tremors, Clara makes a heartfelt, simple plea for Isabella not to hurt them and to remain her best friend. Moved by Clara's innocence and their shared bond, Isabella wavers. She dematerializes, releasing the Enterprise from the energy strands, allowing the ship to escape the nebula. Finally, Isabella reappears in Clara's quarters for a tender, final goodbye, acknowledging her true identity and the unexpected friendship she found. The Enterprise exits the nebula, concluding the mission and the alien encounter.
