Starship Mine

Captain Picard, stranded on the evacuating Enterprise, must stop a group of terrorists from stealing trilithium resin while dealing with the baryon sweep, all before a mysterious ship arrives to extract them.

As the Enterprise undergoes a baryon sweep at the Remmler Array, the crew evacuates, but Captain Picard remains behind to enjoy a moment of solitude. This is quickly interrupted by technicians who have arrived to install additional field diverters, raising Picard's suspicions. Data attempts small talk with Picard, practicing a new subroutine, and Worf and LaForge seek permission to avoid a boring reception.

Picard attends the reception at Arkaria Base hosted by Commander Hutchinson, where Data observes Hutchinson's social techniques. Picard tries to escape Hutchinson's chatter by claiming he needs his saddle. Aboard the Enterprise, Picard discovers an open junction box and confronts Devor, one of the technicians, leading to a fight. Picard learns the technicians are not who they seem when he hears them communicating about by-passing the magnetic containment conduit. He is trapped as the baryon sweep begins, rendering the transporter useless.

Back at Arkaria Base, Data continues to engage Hutchinson while Riker tries to find out what happened to Picard. Geordi notices a suspicious energy reading from a table at the reception, and an attack ensues. The Arkarian waiter and Orton reveal themselves to be part of the conspiracy, taking the crew hostage and killing Hutchinson.

Aboard the Enterprise, the terrorists, led by Kelsey, take over Main Engineering and plan to steal trilithium resin. Picard, posing as a barber named Mott, is captured but uses his wits to sabotage their plans, including destroying a field diverter designed to protect them from the baryon sweep. He overhears their plan to transport the trilithium and tries to stop them, all the while evading capture and dealing with the baryon sweep.

At Arkaria Base, Riker, Troi, and Beverly plan a counterattack. Beverly modifies Geordi's VISOR to emit a hypersonic pulse. Riker distracts Orton, Beverly activates the VISOR, incapacitating everyone except Data who works to stop the incoming ship.

Picard continues to thwart the terrorists' plans, using his knowledge of the Enterprise and his cunning to outwit them, including creating a diversion using chemical compounds. He tries to reason with Kelsey but fails. In Ten Forward, Picard sets a trap, incapacitating one of the terrorists, but Kelsey escapes with the trilithium. As they are beamed off the ship, Picard removes a safety pin from the transport mechanism. Data stops the baryon sweep. After the terrorists beam away, their ship explodes, due to the removed safety pin. The baryon sweep ends and the Enterprise is safe. Picard's saddle, which started the adventure, is returned to him.

Act 1

The Enterprise undergoes a baryon sweep at the Remmler Array, necessitating a full crew evacuation. Captain Picard, seeking a moment of solitude, efficiently handles various crew concerns from Troi's schedule delays to Beverly's medical storage issues and Riker's auto-shutdown sequence. Data attempts small talk with Picard, practicing a new subroutine, prompting Picard to suggest observing Commander Hutchinson at the upcoming Arkaria Base reception. Geordi expresses concern about the high baryon particle levels and the need for additional field diverters, which Picard notes. Worf and Geordi seek permission to avoid the reception, with Worf succeeding. Picard, after confirming the sweep schedule with Administrator Orton, savors a brief, quiet moment on the empty Bridge. This peace shatters with the arrival of six "technicians" (Kelsey, Neil, Pomet, Devor, Satler, Kiros) who disrupt the calm with their noisy work. Picard, intending to attend the reception, claims he needs to retrieve his saddle from his quarters. On his return to the ship, he discovers an open ODN junction box. Devor, one of the technicians, confronts Picard, leading to a physical altercation. Picard incapacitates Devor and overhears Kelsey and Neil discussing bypassing a magnetic containment conduit, confirming his suspicions about their true intentions. He attempts to use the transporter to escape and alert others, but the baryon sweep begins, disabling the system and trapping him on the now silent, dark Enterprise. This act establishes the initial threat, Picard's isolation, and the immediate danger posed by the mysterious technicians.

Act 2

At Arkaria Base, the reception continues, with Data persistently engaging Orton in small talk, much to Orton's and Riker's exasperation. Riker, seeking an escape from Hutchinson's relentless chatter, redirects him to Data, leaving Orton and Riker to briefly commiserate. Geordi, meanwhile, detects an unusual energy reading emanating from a table, prompting his suspicion. The Arkarian Waiter and Orton, displaying increasing nervousness, attempt to dissuade Geordi from investigating. Riker notices the escalating tension. Suddenly, the Waiter and Orton reveal their true colors, drawing hidden weapons and initiating an attack. Riker dives for cover, while Geordi is incapacitated by a phaser blast. Commander Hutchinson, attempting to intervene, is killed by Orton. The remaining crew members are quickly taken hostage, leaving Riker and Data to exchange grim looks, trapped and without immediate recourse. Concurrently, on the Enterprise, Picard drags the unconscious Devor to Sickbay. He discovers Devor's communicator, which crackles to life with Kelsey's voice. Picard overhears Kelsey instructing Kiros to find Devor and then meet in Main Engineering, revealing the terrorists' coordinated plan and their focus on a specific location on the ship. Picard, using Devor's laser-torch, attempts to interrogate the now-reawakened Devor, who defiantly asserts Picard's Starfleet principles prevent him from killing. Picard, unfazed, hyposprays Devor into unconsciousness, confirming his resolve to act. As Picard cautiously navigates the darkened corridors, he is ambushed and captured by Kiros, who holds him at weapon-point as he attempts to open a Turbolift hatch, further isolating Picard and placing him directly in the terrorists' control.

Act 3

The terrorists, now in control of Main Engineering, work to prepare the engine core for their true objective. Kelsey, Neil, Pomet, and Satler meticulously adjust equipment, with Kelsey displaying a calm yet demanding demeanor. Kiros brings Picard into Main Engineering, holding him at weapon-point. Picard, thinking quickly, adopts the persona of "Mott the barber," claiming he returned to the ship for his saddle and became lost. Kelsey, initially skeptical, assigns Satler to guard the seemingly harmless barber. Picard, under Satler's lax watch, observes the terrorists' operations. He reacts with dismay upon hearing Kelsey explicitly state their intention to steal trilithium resin, confirming his worst fears about the material's potential as a weapon. Meanwhile, at Arkaria Base, the hostage situation persists. Riker, Troi, and Beverly discuss their limited options. Beverly tends to an unconscious Geordi, noting Hutchinson's death. Data, ever analytical, proposes a daring counter-plan: modifying Geordi's VISOR to generate a hypersonic pulse, capable of incapacitating everyone in the room. Riker agrees, instructing Beverly to make the adjustments discreetly. Back on the Enterprise, Picard, using the concealed laser-torch he took from Devor, subtly sabotages a field diverter. This triggers a cascade of events: vast quantities of gas flood Main Engineering, alarms blare, and the isolation door begins to close. Amidst the chaos, Picard knocks Satler aside, destroys the diverter, and narrowly escapes into a Jefferies Tube, with Satler in close pursuit. Picard scrambles through the tube, but his path is blocked by the advancing green sheet of the baryon sweep, trapping him between the deadly energy field and the pursuing Satler, intensifying the immediate danger and setting a ticking clock.

Act 4

The baryon sweep claims Satler, who is caught in the deadly energy field while pursuing Picard. Picard, now without his jacket, continues his escape through the corridors, acknowledging Satler's demise with a grim expression. In Main Engineering, Kelsey discovers the extent of Picard's sabotage; the field diverter is fused beyond repair, leaving them vulnerable to the approaching baryon sweep. She makes the critical decision to relocate the trilithium resin to Ten Forward, the last section of the ship to be swept, despite Neil's protests about the unit's portability. Pomet, emerging from the Jefferies Tube, reports Satler's death and presents Kelsey with Picard's Starfleet combadge, revealing "Mott's" true identity and the formidable opponent they face. Picard, having retrieved Klingon weapons from Worf's quarters, uses Devor's communicator to taunt Kelsey. He asserts his knowledge of their escape ship and his intention to be on it, escalating their cat-and-mouse game. Kelsey, in turn, warns him against interfering, threatening to destroy the Enterprise. Picard defiantly states his preference for destroying the ship over allowing the trilithium to fall into terrorist hands, confirming his unwavering resolve. He then conducts an experiment with chemical powders, preparing a new trap. Simultaneously, at Arkaria Base, Beverly completes the modifications to Geordi's VISOR. Riker, after a brief discussion with Troi, decides to create a distraction. He confronts Orton, then delivers a powerful punch, sending Orton sprawling. As Riker grapples with the Waiter, Beverly activates the VISOR, emitting a brief burst of light. The hypersonic pulse incapacitates everyone in the room, except for Data, who remains unaffected. Meanwhile, Pomet, searching for Picard, is ambushed. Picard, concealed in a corridor, fires a crossbow bolt tipped with a tranquilizing agent, incapacitating Pomet. However, as Picard moves to disarm Pomet, Kiros appears, holding Picard at weapon-point, once again capturing the Captain and ending the act on a cliffhanger.

Act 5

Kiros, having recaptured Picard, communicates with Kelsey, who instructs them to meet at an intersection. As they proceed, Kelsey ruthlessly executes Neil, who questions their continued movement, demonstrating her cold efficiency and disregard for her crew. Picard attempts to reason with Kelsey, revealing his true identity as Captain Jean-Luc Picard and offering himself as a hostage in exchange for leaving the trilithium. Kelsey dismisses his offer, confirming her motive is profit, not politics, and reiterates her confidence in their plan. Simultaneously, at Arkaria Base, Data detects the approaching scout ship—the terrorists' escape vessel—and observes Orton dropping the defense shields. Riker, seeing their window of opportunity, instructs Data, the only one unaffected by the hypersonic pulse, to stop the ship once everyone else is incapacitated. Beverly activates the modified VISOR, and the hypersonic pulse renders Orton and the Waiter unconscious, leaving Data free to move to the computer panel. Picard, Kiros, and Kelsey enter Ten Forward, where Picard has set a trap. He guides Kiros to step on a combination of white and black powders, triggering a small explosion that incapacitates Kiros. Picard then lunges at Kelsey, knocking the trilithium thermos from her grasp. As they fight, the baryon sweep breaches the wall of Ten Forward, forcing them to contend with both each other and the advancing energy field. Kelsey, regaining her weapon and the thermos, receives a signal from her ship and beams away, leaving Picard trapped and facing imminent destruction by the sweep. Desperate, Picard contacts Arkaria Base, urgently demanding the deactivation of the baryon sweep. Data, having reached the computer panel, successfully stops the sweep, saving Picard. The scout ship, carrying Kelsey and the trilithium, explodes in space. Picard reveals he surreptitiously removed the safety pin from the trilithium container during their struggle, ensuring its destruction. The Enterprise returns to normal operations. Beverly tends to Picard's injuries. Worf, much to the amusement of Riker, Beverly, and Troi, returns Picard's saddle, which he found in a maintenance locker, bringing a humorous and satisfying close to the perilous adventure.
