Suspicions

When Dr. Crusher champions a Ferengi scientist's dangerous experiment to fly a shuttle into a star, the mission's fatal consequences and a suspicious death lead her to uncover a conspiracy and a surprising saboteur.

Dr. Beverly Crusher, seeking a new area of research, attends the Altine Consortium and becomes intrigued by Doctor Reyga, a Ferengi scientist ostracized for his unorthodox metaphasic shield technology. Believing in his potential, Beverly invites Reyga aboard the Enterprise, gathering scientists from various cultures to evaluate his invention. Despite skepticism, Reyga convinces Kurak (a Klingon), T'Pan (a Vulcan) and her human husband Doctor Christopher, that his device can withstand a star's corona. Jo'Bril (a Takaran) volunteers to pilot the modified shuttle into the Vaytan star's corona to prove its viability. During the demonstration, elevated neutrino levels suddenly appear in the cabin, causing Jo'Bril to lose consciousness. The Enterprise crew can't beam him out of the craft until it exits the corona, but he dies shortly after arriving in Sickbay.

Crushed by the mission's failure and Jo'Bril's death, Beverly becomes obsessed with uncovering what went wrong. Her investigation leads her to discovers inconsistencies in Jo'Bril's physiology, and she suspects foul play after Reyga dies in a plasma surge. When Picard informs her that Reyga's family refuses an autopsy, Beverly secretly performs one against orders, furthering her suspicions but finding no immediate answers. Despite Picard's warnings, she questions the scientists aboard, learning that Kurak and Reyga argued not long before his death.

Beverly eventually discovers the shield was deliberately sabotaged when Data helps her understand that a tetryon field could disrupt the shield. After enlisting Ogawa to help her access logs, she determines that Jo'Bril's body shows traces of it. Defying Picard's direct order, Beverly launches the shuttle modified with Reyga's shield into the sun's corona herself to prove that the invention works. While inside the corona, Jo'Bril appears, revealing that he faked his death. He claims his species can manipulate their physiology to enter a state of 'physio-stasis'. Further, he admits to sabotaging the initial flight (with him as pilot) so that only he would pursue the technology to weaponize it.

Jo'Bril severs communications with the Enterprise to make it appear that the shuttle was destroyed, but Beverly subverts his plans, triggering a violent collision. During the chaos, Beverly retrieves a phaser and vaporizes the Takaran after he reveals a gaping hole in his chest (showing just how much his species' physiology differs from most races). With the ship about to fail, she quickly reroutes a course back to Enterprise, who had begun to search for wreckage. Back on the Enterprise, Beverly is reinstated and reflects on the events that transpired. As a thank you for Guinan's advice to become involved, Beverly presents her with a state-of-the-art tennis racquet only to discover Guinan has never played tennis. The Enterprise then travels to warp.

Act 1

This act introduces Dr. Beverly Crusher's professional crisis and the events leading to it. The teaser opens with an agitated Beverly packing, revealing she's been relieved of duty. Guinan's casual visit for a tennis injury provides a narrative frame for Beverly to recount her downfall. Beverly explains her motivation to attend the Altine Consortium, seeking new research and feeling "too comfortable." There, she discovered Dr. Reyga, a Ferengi scientist ostracized for his unorthodox metaphasic shield technology. Believing in his potential, Beverly invited Reyga and other prominent scientists—Kurak (Klingon), T'Pan (Vulcan), Dr. Christopher (human), and Jo'Bril (Takaran)—aboard the Enterprise to evaluate his invention. Despite initial skepticism, Reyga convinced the group of his shield's viability. Jo'Bril volunteered to pilot a modified shuttle into the Vaytan star's corona for a demonstration. The mission began successfully, with the shield holding against extreme temperatures and radiation. However, elevated neutrino levels and then rapidly rising baryon particles appeared in the cabin, causing Jo'Bril to lose consciousness. The Enterprise crew could not beam him out due to solar interference until the shuttle exited the corona. Jo'Bril died shortly after arriving in Sickbay, leaving Beverly devastated and questioning the mission's failure. This act establishes the core conflict: the perceived failure of Reyga's invention and the tragic death of Jo'Bril, which directly leads to Beverly's professional jeopardy.

Act 2

Following Jo'Bril's death, Beverly grapples with profound feelings of failure and helplessness, confiding in Guinan. She recounts her initial investigation into Jo'Bril's death, where she discovered his unique, injury-resistant physiology, suggesting his death was caused at a cellular level despite minimal radiation exposure. Picard advises Beverly to rest, subtly questioning her intense focus on the case. Beverly, Data, and Geordi meticulously examine the shuttle, confirming micro-crystalline damage from baryonic radiation but finding no malfunction in Reyga's metaphasic shield system itself. Reyga remains convinced of his shield's integrity, but the other scientists and crew express doubts, attributing the failure to unforeseen elements in the corona. As Chief Medical Officer, Beverly makes the difficult decision to cancel all further tests, prioritizing the safety of the crew over Reyga's desperate pleas to prove his invention. This decision, while medically sound, effectively ends Reyga's opportunity to validate his life's work. The act concludes with Reyga's defiant departure, determined to prove himself despite the setback, marking the last time Beverly sees him alive and setting the stage for the next tragic event.

Act 3

This act plunges Beverly deeper into the mystery, shifting from a perceived accident to suspected murder. The narrative continues in flashback, as Beverly and Worf investigate a plasma surge in Science Lab Four, discovering Dr. Reyga's body. He is clutching a discharged plasma infuser, leading Worf to suspect suicide. However, Beverly's medical instincts immediately raise doubts, noting the unnatural grip on the device. Her suspicions solidify, but her path to investigation is obstructed when Picard informs her that Reyga's family, adhering to Ferengi death rituals, strictly forbids an autopsy. Despite Picard's sympathetic warnings about the futility and cultural insensitivity of pursuing the matter, Beverly remains convinced of foul play. Defying Picard's direct order and Starfleet protocol, she secretly performs an autopsy, finding no immediate answers but deepening her conviction that Reyga was murdered. Picard, angered by her insubordination and the potential diplomatic repercussions, officially relieves her of duty. The flashback ends, returning to Beverly's quarters where she finishes packing, explaining her predicament to Guinan. Guinan, instead of offering sympathy, challenges Beverly's anger and despair, urging her to act on her belief that a murderer is aboard the Enterprise, providing the catalyst for Beverly to abandon her resignation and resume her investigation with renewed determination.

Act 4

Driven by Guinan's challenge, Beverly covertly resumes her investigation, focusing on the possibility of sabotage. She enlists Data's help in the shuttlebay, inquiring about potential sabotage methods. Data explains that a phased ionic pulse, generated from various ship locations, could have created a temporary tetryon field inside the shuttle, disrupting the metaphasic shield. Beverly immediately connects this to the possibility of finding residual tetryon traces in Jo'Bril's tissue. Commander Riker intercepts Beverly, warning her against any "foolish" actions that could worsen her impending formal inquiry, urging her to remain in her quarters. Beverly, however, firmly rejects his advice, asserting she "can't quit now" and prioritizing the truth over her career. Back in Sickbay, she attempts to access restricted autopsy files but is denied. Nurse Ogawa, witnessing Beverly's unwavering resolve, defies her own orders and uses her access to retrieve Jo'Bril's medical records. Together, they perform a molecular-level tissue scan on Jo'Bril's body, discovering the critical evidence: tetryon traces in his subdermal tissue. This discovery confirms the sabotage. With grim determination, Beverly realizes there's only one way to definitively prove Reyga's shield works and expose the saboteur. Defying Picard's implicit and explicit orders, she launches the modified shuttle, the Justman, into the sun's corona herself, shocking the Bridge crew and setting the stage for a dangerous confrontation.

Act 5

Beverly, now piloting the shuttle into the sun's corona, confirms to a shocked Picard that she intends to prove Reyga's shield works and was sabotaged. Picard's attempts to recall the shuttle fail as Beverly has isolated navigational control, and solar interference prevents a tractor beam lock. As the shuttle plunges into the corona, Beverly confirms the metaphasic shield is holding, vindicating Reyga's work. Suddenly, communications with the Enterprise are severed, and Jo'Bril emerges from a compartment within the shuttle, alive and holding a phaser. He reveals his species' ability for "physio-stasis," explaining he faked his death and was conscious during his autopsy. Jo'Bril confesses to sabotaging the initial flight to discredit Reyga, intending to be the sole developer of the weaponized metaphasic technology. He then attempts to obscure the shuttle from Enterprise sensors, making it appear destroyed. Beverly, realizing his true intentions, lunges for the controls, violently altering the shuttle's course. In the ensuing chaos, the phaser is dislodged. A desperate struggle for the weapon ensues, during which Beverly punches and kicks Jo'Bril. She retrieves the phaser and fires, hitting Jo'Bril, who reveals a gaping hole in his chest—a testament to his unique physiology. Beverly fires a continuous burst, vaporizing him. With the shuttle failing, she reroutes it back to the Enterprise, which had begun a search for wreckage. Safely back, Beverly is reinstated. The episode concludes with Beverly presenting Guinan with a state-of-the-art tennis racquet as a thank you, only to discover Guinan has never played tennis, highlighting Guinan's subtle but effective manipulation to motivate Beverly. The Enterprise then warps away, leaving Beverly to reflect on the events.
