Phantasms

When Data's nightmares begin to manifest in the real world, endangering the Enterprise crew, he must delve into the meaning of his dreams to uncover and combat a hidden interphasic threat that is consuming the ship.

The Enterprise is preparing to test its new warp core when Data begins experiencing disturbing nightmares, a first for the android. These nightmares involve dismemberment, strange workmen, and a menacing ringing sound. Simultaneously, Captain Picard is reluctantly preparing to attend an annual Starfleet Admiral's banquet. The new warp core malfunctions during its initial test, delaying the Enterprise and preventing Picard from attending his engagement. Data consults with Counselor Troi about his nightmares, and she encourages him to explore them further. He later seeks guidance from a holodeck simulation of Sigmund Freud, which proves unhelpful.

As the Enterprise remains stranded, Data's nightmares intensify, bleeding into reality. He experiences waking dreams where he sees disturbing images on his crewmates, such as a mouth on Troi's shoulder and a straw in Riker's head. He attacks Troi, driven by an uncontrollable urge to eliminate what he perceives as a threat. After being subdued, Data is confined to his quarters while the crew tries to understand what is happening to him. Dr. Crusher discovers that the crew is being infested by interphasic creatures that are slowly causing cellular degradation.

Picard and the crew realize that Data's waking dreams are somehow connected to the creatures. They link Data's neural net to the holodeck to observe his dreams in real-time. Inside Data's dream, Picard and Geordi witness the bizarre imagery and try to decipher its meaning. They discover that the dream elements symbolize the interphasic creatures and their method of extracting cellular peptides. Picard figures out they must respond to the dream and Data's shriek, hurting the workmen in his dreams, as they represent the creatures attacking the ship. Data then emits a high-frequency interphasic pulse, which eliminates the creatures from the crew.

The crew traces the origin of the creatures to a warp plasma conduit manufactured with a new interphasic fusion process. With the threat resolved, the Enterprise prepares for warp again. Picard, no longer needing to delay, resigns himself to attending the Admiral's banquet. Data, having confronted his nightmares and contributed to saving the ship, reflects on his experience with Troi and begins to consider the implications of his own evolving psyche.

Act 1

Data experiences his first nightmare, a disturbing vision of workmen dismantling a warp plasma conduit and tearing him apart, which he dismisses upon waking. The Enterprise prepares to test its new warp core, a process delayed by Captain Picard's reluctance to attend an annual Starfleet Admiral's banquet. Data confides in Geordi about his nightmare, but Geordi attributes it to normal dream processes. The initial warp core test fails, causing a ship-wide power outage and further delaying Picard. Counselor Troi encourages Data to explore his dreams as a natural expression of his unconscious mind. Data then initiates another dream sequence, entering a surreal Ten Forward. In this dream, Worf eats 'cellular peptide cake,' Riker has a straw in his head, and the ominous ringing sound returns. Data encounters the workmen again, who force him to cut a piece of 'cellular peptide cake' from Troi's torso, which has transformed into a cake. Troi screams in pain. Data wakes abruptly, finding Troi, Geordi, and Worf attempting to rouse him, realizing he has inexplicably overslept. He concludes that something is profoundly wrong, as such an occurrence is impossible for an android.

Act 2

Geordi's diagnostics find no technical faults with Data's internal systems, leading him to suggest Data's nightmares might be a new aspect of his 'human experience.' Unconvinced, Data seeks a more scientific explanation. He activates a holodeck simulation of Sigmund Freud, hoping for analytical insight into his dreams. Freud offers a comically over-the-top Freudian interpretation, linking the 'cake' and 'knife' to dismemberment, an Oedipal complex, and sexual inadequacy, which Data finds unhelpful and dismisses. Meanwhile, the Enterprise attempts a second warp core test, which again fails catastrophically, blowing out the power converter and impulse engines, rendering the ship completely immobile. This further frustrates Picard, who must again inform Admiral Nakamura of his delay. While working on a plasma conduit, Data sees a coil brace that strikingly resembles the knife from his dream, triggering a waking dream. In this waking dream, Geordi has an animal mouth on his neck, the ringing sound returns, and Riker, with a straw in his head, demands Data 'answer' the ringing. Data opens a panel on his abdomen to reveal a ringing telephone receiver, from which Freud's voice commands him to 'Kill them. You must kill them all... before it's too late.' Geordi snaps Data out of the waking dream, leaving Data shocked and confused by his perception.

Act 3

Data discusses his escalating experiences with Counselor Troi, explaining how elements from his nightmares, including sounds, objects, and smells, are now bleeding into his waking reality. He reviews various dream analysis theories, from prophetic functions to random neural discharges, noting their inability to fully explain his situation. Data contemplates Freud's theory, questioning if the dream knife symbolizes an unconscious desire to inflict violence. Troi dismisses many of these theories as flawed and obsolete, instead proposing that Data might be developing a neurosis as his neural net grows more complex and 'human.' Data, intrigued and hopeful by this possibility, agrees to regular counseling sessions and, as a safety measure, agrees to shut down his dream program. Meanwhile, Picard, still stranded, faces renewed pressure from Admiral Nakamura regarding the banquet, but maintains his confidence in his engineering staff. In Engineering, Picard's attempts to assist are subtly redirected by Geordi, who is relieved when Ensign Tyler distracts the Captain. Geordi then realizes Data has vanished from Engineering. Data, having left Engineering, confronts Troi in a turbolift. Holding the coil brace, which resembles the dream knife, Data calmly apologizes to Troi before stabbing her in the shoulder, causing her to cry out in pain as the turbolift doors close.

Act 4

Riker and Worf discover a shocking scene in the turbolift: Troi lies unconscious and bleeding from a shoulder wound, with Data standing over her, holding the coil brace. Data immediately attacks Riker, swinging the brace, but Worf quickly subdues him. Data, suddenly lucid, drops the brace and expresses confusion, realizing what he has done. Riker calls for medical assistance for Troi. In the Observation Lounge, Data explains his actions, stating he experienced another waking dream where he saw a 'mouth' on Troi's shoulder and a 'straw' on Riker's head, feeling an uncontrollable urge to 'eliminate' these perceived threats. He confirms he had shut down his dream program, deepening the mystery. Picard, despite Data's explanation, relieves him of duty and confines him to quarters as a sensible precaution. In Sickbay, Dr. Crusher examines Troi's wound, discovering a strange, mottled red discoloration and cellular degradation. Using an interphasic scanner, Beverly reveals a previously unseen, leech-like creature latched onto Troi's skin. Further scans reveal similar creatures infesting Beverly, Riker, and Picard, confirming a widespread, interphasic infestation. Data, confined to his quarters, entrusts Worf with the care of his cat, Spot, expressing fear that he might harm the animal during another uncontrollable waking dream, underscoring his deep distress and the danger he poses.

Act 5

Beverly reports to the senior staff that the interphasic creatures are extracting cellular peptides, causing widespread cellular decay, and she has no means to stop them. Geordi confirms the creatures exist in an interphasic state, making them nearly undetectable and impervious to conventional defenses. The crew realizes Data is not infested and that his dreams and waking visions are symbolic perceptions of these interphasic creatures and their method of cellular extraction. Picard decides they must re-engage Data's dream program, linking his neural net to the holodeck to observe his dreams in real-time, hoping to decipher the creatures' nature and weakness. Inside Data's dream, Picard and Geordi witness the 'cellular peptide cake' (symbolizing peptide extraction), the ringing telephone (a warning), and Freud (Data's unconscious mind trying to warn him). The three workmen, now identified as 'enemies,' appear and 'kill' Freud, then begin dismantling the warp plasma conduit. Picard realizes Data's high-pitched shriek, which caused the workmen pain in his initial nightmare, is the key. Data emits the shriek, incapacitating the workmen. With this understanding, Data urgently instructs Geordi to adjust his positronic subprocessor to emit a high-frequency interphasic pulse, mirroring the shriek. The pulse is emitted, and Beverly confirms it successfully disintegrates all the creatures from the crew. The crew traces the creatures' origin to the new warp plasma conduit, manufactured with an interphasic fusion process, which attracted the organisms and caused the warp core malfunctions. With the threat resolved and the ship's systems being repaired, Picard, no longer delayed, resigns himself to attending the Admiral's banquet. Geordi resolves his awkwardness with Ensign Tyler, offering her genuine praise. Finally, Troi brings Data a 'Data cake,' and they reflect on his experience, with Data contemplating the implications of his evolving psyche and the complex nature of his 'humanity.'
