Inheritance

Data grapples with the sudden appearance of Juliana Tainer, who claims to be his mother, while the Enterprise races to save a planet from a geological catastrophe, forcing Data to reconcile his past with his present.

The Enterprise arrives at Atrea to assist in averting a planetary disaster, where Data meets Juliana Tainer, the human wife of an Atrean scientist. Juliana stuns Data by claiming to be his creator Dr. Soong's wife, effectively his mother. Data, who has no memory of her, begins to investigate her claims, finding some corroborating evidence but also inconsistencies, specifically the lack of any mention of her in Soong's logs.

As Data attempts to reconcile his logical mind with the emotional implications of this new relationship, he seeks counsel from Geordi and Troi. Geordi encourages him to embrace the unexpected, while Troi explores Data's reservations about Juliana's sudden appearance and her reasons for not contacting him sooner.

Data begins to bond with Juliana, sharing his creative pursuits such as music and painting. They collaborate to save Atrea by injecting plasma into the planet's core. However, Data remains curious about his past and Juliana's role in it. During their time together, Juliana reveals that she was initially against Data's creation, fearing he would become like Lore, and admits she chose to leave him behind on Omicron Theta when the Crystalline Entity attacked. This revelation shakes Data, causing him to question her motives and the nature of their relationship.

While working to stabilize the planet's core, a cave-in occurs, and Data and Juliana must work together to complete the mission. During a dangerous situation, Juliana is injured, revealing her to be an android herself, a secret Dr. Soong kept hidden. Data learns the truth; the real Juliana was injured during the Crystalline Entity attack and died, prompting Soong to transfer her memories into an android body. Soong programmed her to remain unaware of her artificial nature, believing it would ensure her happiness.

Faced with the dilemma of whether to reveal the truth to Juliana or honor Soong's wishes, Data consults Picard, Beverly, and Troi. Each offers a different perspective, weighing Juliana's potential devastation against her right to know the truth and Data's own desire for connection. Ultimately, Data decides to protect Juliana's illusion of humanity, choosing not to disclose her true nature. The Enterprise successfully saves Atrea, and Data bids farewell to Juliana, carrying the weight of his secret and a poignant sense of connection and loss.

Act 1

The Enterprise arrives at Atrea to assist with a critical planetary geological crisis, where the molten core is rapidly solidifying, threatening to render the world uninhabitable within thirteen months. Captain Picard, Geordi, and Data meet with Atrean scientist Pran Tainer and his human wife, Juliana Tainer, who is also a geologist. Juliana details the dire situation, emphasizing the urgency and the potential for catastrophic loss of life. Data and Geordi swiftly propose a complex and high-stakes solution: ferro-plasmic infusion. This procedure involves using the ship's phasers to drill deep into the planet's magma pockets and then injecting sufficient plasma to re-liquefy the core, stabilizing it for centuries. This innovative plan is accepted by the Atreans, and preparations for the dangerous operation begin immediately. As the initial meeting concludes, Juliana approaches Data, her demeanor shifting from professional to deeply personal. She asks Data if he knows her, then reveals a stunning and emotionally charged truth: she was present at his creation on Omicron Theta and claims to be Dr. Soong's wife, effectively making her Data's mother. This unexpected and profound revelation leaves Data visibly puzzled, his logical processors grappling with an entirely new and unrecorded aspect of his past, and the audience with a significant, emotionally charged cliffhanger, setting the stage for a deeply personal and existential journey for the android.

Act 2

Following Juliana's startling revelation, Data seeks to verify her claims, noting his complete lack of memory regarding her. Juliana explains that his memory processors were intentionally wiped after his initial "childhood" development and deactivation on Omicron Theta, prior to the devastating Crystalline Entity attack. Data, however, finds no mention of her as Dr. Soong's wife in the colonists' logs, only a "Juliana O'Donnell." Juliana counters this inconsistency by explaining that she and Soong married secretly on Mavala Four due to her mother's strong disapproval of Soong's eccentricities and age. Data then reveals he encountered Dr. Soong shortly before his death, a fact that deeply affects Juliana, who had not known of Soong's passing. She confesses that she eventually left Soong because she felt he loved his work more than he loved her, a difficult admission for her. Data, ever the seeker of objective truth, begins to cross-reference passenger manifests and other historical data, finding corroborating evidence that Juliana O'Donnell and Noonian Soong did indeed travel to Mavala Four during the period in question. Despite this partial verification, Data struggles to reconcile her detailed story with Soong's complete silence about her in his own logs. Geordi La Forge encourages Data to embrace the unexpected and consider that Soong might have omitted her from his records due to personal heartbreak. Data acknowledges his profound curiosity about this previously unknown past. Later, Data approaches Juliana in Ten Forward and, after internal deliberation and considering Geordi's advice, addresses her as "Mother," signifying his acceptance of her claim and his desire to build a relationship with her, marking a significant emotional step.

Act 3

Data and Juliana continue to bond, with Juliana sharing more intimate anecdotes about Data's early "childhood" and Dr. Soong's eccentricities, such as his determined but ultimately abandoned attempts to program hiccups into Data and Data's initial, uninhibited lack of modesty. These stories provide a deeper, more personal context to Data's origins. Data, however, seeks counsel from Counselor Troi regarding Juliana's "limitless" interest in him and, more pointedly, his logical query about her failure to contact him sooner over the years. Troi suggests it might relate to his parents' separation and Juliana's desire to put that painful part of her life behind her, offering an emotional perspective Data struggles to grasp. During preparations for drilling the first magma pocket, Juliana inadvertently reveals a painful truth: she was initially vehemently against Data's creation. She explains her fear that he would turn out like Lore, given Soong's previous failed android prototypes and Lore's malevolent nature. This revelation deeply affects Data, who directly confronts her about her opposition to his very existence and her subsequent, decades-long lack of contact. Juliana, overwhelmed by guilt and emotion, admits she lied about there being no room for him in the escape pod from Omicron Theta. She confesses she deliberately left him behind, driven by an overwhelming fear that if he turned out like Lore, she would be forced to dismantle him, a trauma she could not bear to repeat. Overcome with this painful admission, Juliana abruptly leaves, leaving Data to process this profound and emotionally devastating truth about his abandonment.

Act 4

A palpable tension now exists between Data and Juliana following her confession of abandonment, with Juliana visibly uncomfortable and avoiding Data's gaze as they work. The drilling operation for the second magma pocket is underway, but the Enterprise encounters a dangerous pocket of magnesite ore, causing severe shuddering throughout the ship. Juliana, demonstrating remarkable skill and quick thinking, rapidly adjusts the phaser harmonics, stabilizing the beam through a combination of precise calculation and fortunate timing. Her quick action averts a crisis, impressing Geordi but leaving Data regarding her with an unreadable, intensified gaze, suggesting his suspicions are growing. After successfully drilling the second shaft, Pran suggests setting up the infusion unit in the first pocket while the second cools, providing a temporary reprieve. Data and Juliana proceed to the first magma pocket to calibrate an infusion unit. Data continues to observe Juliana intently, his expression becoming more focused than casual, noticing subtle inconsistencies in her behavior and capabilities. Pran, aware of the lingering tension, attempts to mediate their strained relationship, but Data directly asks Juliana if she would have left him behind if he were biological. She honestly replies no, explaining her profound fear of having to dismantle another "child" like Lore, a trauma she could not endure again. Data accepts her apology, and a moment of reconciliation occurs, seemingly mending their rift. Later, during a concert in Ten Forward where Data and Juliana perform a violin duet, Data notices something profoundly curious about Juliana's performance: every pitch and intonation is exactly the same as their practice, a flawless, mechanical replication. This observation, combined with earlier subtle cues about her abilities, intensifies his suspicion about her true nature. This prompts Data to seek Beverly Crusher's help to surreptitiously examine Juliana's medical records, expressing his belief that "she is not who she claims to be," just before an urgent cave-in report interrupts their investigation.

Act 5

A sudden and severe cave-in occurs in one of the magma pockets, injuring Pran Tainer. Data and Juliana volunteer to return to the highly unstable pocket to finish configuring the infusion unit, as any delay would jeopardize the entire mission to save Atrea. Geordi warns Data about a misaligned transporter pattern enhancer, which Data must manually re-align for their beam-out, adding another layer of risk to the already perilous task. Inside the precarious magma pocket, Data and Juliana face further escalating seismic activity. A powerful tremor creates a sharply defined two-foot ledge, and Data notes the increasing instability, urging Juliana to hasten their work. They discover the infusion unit is damaged by falling rocks and must begin reprogramming its complex sequence from scratch, working under immense pressure and the constant, low-level rumble of molten magma. Another violent tremor strikes, causing more rocks and debris to fall from the ceiling and walls, forcing them to cling to the infusion unit to maintain balance. Despite the danger, they manage to complete the programming. As they rush back to the beam-out point, a massive aftershock causes the cavern floor to drop another thirty feet, leaving them stranded on the edge of a sheer precipice, far above the pattern enhancers. With no hand-holds in the rock face and the ceiling collapsing around them, Data makes a split-second, desperate decision to jump, pulling Juliana firmly by the arm. As they land on the floor below, Data is able to absorb the shock, but Juliana hits the ground hard and is knocked unconscious. To Data's (and the audience's) astonishment, her arm is torn off, revealing a mass of wires and blinking circuitry, unequivocally confirming she is an android. Data, however, stares down at her exposed arm with a strangely calm demeanor, showing no undue surprise, indicating he had already suspected the profound truth.

Act 6

In Sickbay, Beverly Crusher and Geordi La Forge examine the still-unconscious Juliana, confirming she is a highly advanced Soong-type android, meticulously designed to appear human. They discover she possesses tear ducts, sweat glands, capillaries, and a feedback processor that emits a false bio-signal, even mimicking the aging process. Data explains his prior suspicions, citing Juliana's ability to perform complex calculations without computer assistance, her blinking pattern governed by a Fourier Series (identical to his own), and her perfectly replicated violin performance, which only an artificial life-form could achieve. Geordi then discovers a hidden information module with a holographic interface within Juliana's head panel. Data activates it on the holodeck, revealing a holographic message from Dr. Noonian Soong. Soong explains the profound truth: the real Juliana O'Donnell, his wife and Data's co-creator, died after being severely injured during the Crystalline Entity attack. Overcome with grief, he transferred her memories into an android body, meticulously programming her to remain unaware of her artificial nature, believing this illusion was essential for her happiness. Soong instructs Data to re-insert the chip, which will erase her memory of the accident, and pleads with Data to let her live out her life believing she is human, emphasizing that "in every way that matters, she is Juliana Soong." Data then consults Captain Picard, Beverly, and Counselor Troi, grappling with the immense ethical dilemma of revealing the truth to Juliana. Beverly argues for her right to know and deal with reality, while Troi emphasizes the potential devastation and the irony of robbing her of the one thing Data has always desired: to be human. Data admits his personal desire for a unique connection as another android, highlighting his internal conflict. Ultimately, Data decides to honor Soong's wishes and protect Juliana's illusion of humanity. He re-inserts the chip, and Juliana awakens with no memory of the revelation. As Juliana prepares to depart Atrea, Data shares Soong's dying words about his great love for her, assuring her that Soong was referring to her. Juliana, deeply touched, reflects on an Atrean saying about children born of love, implying Data's inherent goodness. They share a poignant farewell, with Data carrying the weight of his secret and a profound, bittersweet sense of connection and loss.
