Target Planet

The unknown planet fills the viewport with swirling bands of ochre and rust, its atmosphere roiling with dust storms that streak across the curved horizon like the brushstrokes of a dying star. The scoutship’s failing sensors can’t resolve features through the electromagnetic interference, only the planet’s pull tugging at the vessel’s weakened hull as gravity claws at the crew’s stomachs. Heat radiates through the cracked viewport, carrying the scent of burnt wiring and ozone that stings the eyes and throat, while the surface below remains obscured by a perpetual haze of ionized particles. The planet’s gravity well compresses time, drawing the scoutship closer despite the Pilot’s warnings, until the only certainty is the inevitability of entry—whether by choice or by the ship’s collapse. The air outside will be thicker than the smoke filling the cabin, filled with the metallic tang of disturbed regolith and the electric crackle of atmospheric ionization.
