The Weald

A vast, wooded region in southeast England (historically known as the Weald) alive with the clamor of iron forges. Henry pictures himself there with Cromwell, tramping through misty forests to haggle with soot-streaked ironmasters over sharper ordnance—cannons that hurl farther, muskets that fire truer. The region is characterized by dense woods, glowing forges, charcoal burners feeding smoky pits, and acrid fumes hanging in the air amid ancient oaks. This gritty expanse symbolizes escape from court intrigue, offering the king a connection to the sweat of men who smelt the realm's cannons and tools. Cromwell, however, dismisses such fantasies, as the king's duties chain him to politics.
