Redfern Dell

A dense, shadowed woodland dell where the earthen floor is carpeted with brittle undergrowth and damp leaf litter that muffles footfalls. The air hangs thick with the scent of wet soil and crushed green herbs, the foliage so thick in places that branches nearly scrape stone walls of nearby mine structures. Sunlight fractures weakly through the canopy in paltry rays, painting dappled patches across the uneven terrain where miners’ tracks and shallow ruts cut through the soil. Scattered among the ferns and foxglove, thin tripwires lie concealed, some connected to old mine apparatus repurposed as deadly traps. Scorched earth and broken stems mark where recent struggles occurred—one path leading to a battered coach over-turned against a tree, another to a rusted metal shack that serves as a temporary refuge. The dell feels alive with quiet menace, its beauty belying the lethal designs woven into its fabric.
