The magnetic tapes inside the automated receptionist AI are the critical component that fails when Zoe inputs the insoluble equation. These tapes, which store the machine’s programming and data, overheat as the system attempts—and fails—to process the unsolvable code. The resulting short circuit causes sparks and smoke, culminating in the tapes’ complete destruction. Their failure is the direct cause of the receptionist’s shutdown, exposing the vulnerability of IE’s automated systems and providing Zoe and Isobel with an opening to proceed further into the facility.

Before: Intact and functional, stored within the receptionist AI’s housing. They are humming softly, processing queries and enforcing access protocols as designed.
