Sergeant Catherine Cawood's life spirals as she confronts Tommy Lee Royce, the man who destroyed her family, while simultaneously working to solve a kidnapping case, pushing her to her physical and emotional limits.

In the aftermath of a policewoman's murder, Sergeant Catherine Cawood navigates the complexities of her personal and professional life. Kevin, an accountant, is burdened by the knowledge of the crime, which slowly eats at him as he contemplates telling the police what he knows. Catherine investigates a potential lead in a kidnapping case, tracing it to Ashley Cowgill and his property on Milton Avenue. She encounters Julie Mulligan, Ashley's bright orange wife, who unwittingly provides clues that lead Catherine closer to the truth. Catherine's suspicion of Ashley grows as she uncovers evidence suggesting sinister activities at his property.

Catherine and Phil lay a trap for the kidnappers, the main objective is to find Ann and save her from the inevitable: her murder. Phil enlists Catherine in the investigation of Ann's kidnapping, setting the stage for a dangerous confrontation. They try to stall Ann by setting up wiretaps in their devices. Act 2

Act Two deepens the intertwining of Catherine's professional investigation and her profound personal trauma. Catherine visits Lynn Dewhurst, Tommy Lee Royce's mother, seeking information about his whereabouts. During this tense encounter, Lynn shockingly reveals her knowledge that Tommy is the father of Catherine's grandson, Ryan. This revelation profoundly rattles Catherine, triggering a vivid hallucination of her deceased daughter, Becky, and highlighting the deep, unresolved pain Tommy inflicted upon her family. Concurrently, Helen, Ann Gallagher's mother, finally breaks her silence and confides in Catherine about Ann's kidnapping, driven by Catherine's persistent concern. Catherine immediately contacts Phil Crabtree of the National Crime Agency, initiating an official, high-stakes investigation. During their meeting, Nevison, Ann's father, reveals that his accountant, Kevin Weatherill, was the one delivering the ransom money, and that the kidnappers specifically requested him, making Kevin a prime suspect. Phil Crabtree immediately mobilizes resources to place Kevin under surveillance and prepares to wiretap Nevison's phone. Meanwhile, Tommy, after securing Lynn's cellar for a fee, moves the drugged Ann into the new, more secure location, revealing to Ann his discovery of having a son, unknowingly connecting his heinous actions to Catherine's family. Catherine also encounters institutional resistance when a key piece of drug evidence she seized from Marcus Gascoigne is deemed unusable due to "damaged packaging," suggesting a cover-up and further frustrating her pursuit of justice. This act effectively raises the stakes by bringing the police and NCA into the kidnapping case, while simultaneously intensifying Catherine's personal battle against Tommy and the systemic corruption she faces.

Act 3

The final act propels the narrative towards a brutal confrontation, bringing all the converging storylines to a head. Tommy Lee Royce, now aware of Ryan's existence, directly confronts Catherine at Ryan's school, asserting his paternity. Catherine, in a desperate attempt to protect Ryan, vehemently denies his claim and threatens Tommy with extreme violence, then quickly drives away, leaving Ryan confused. Back at home, Catherine's sister, Clare, makes a crucial connection, suggesting that the items Catherine found in the Milton Avenue cellar might be linked to the kidnapping, prompting Catherine to relay this information to Phil Crabtree, officially linking the two investigations. The news then broadcasts a report about the PC's murder, mentioning a yellow Mini, which Nevison immediately recognizes as Ann's, further escalating the urgency. This revelation finally pushes Kevin, consumed by guilt and fear, to confess to Nevison his knowledge of the kidnappers' identities. Armed with this new information, Catherine returns to Lynn Dewhurst's house. Noticing Lynn's black eye and her cryptic mention of a "dog" in the cellar, Catherine's suspicion peaks. She forces her way into the padlocked cellar and discovers Ann Gallagher, bound and gagged, in a horrific state. Before Catherine can radio for backup, Tommy Lee Royce arrives, headbutts his mother, and lunges at Catherine. A ferocious fight ensues, with Catherine battling the man who raped her daughter. Despite Catherine's fierce resistance, Tommy's superior physical strength overwhelms her, inflicting severe injuries. However, Ann, having managed to free herself, intervenes, striking Tommy with a dumbbell. Catherine, gathering her last reserves of strength, uses her CS spray on Tommy. She then pushes Ann towards the exit, and as she calls for an ambulance, collapses, seemingly succumbing to her injuries, leaving Ann to face the aftermath alone in a shocking cliffhanger.
