Act 1

Tommy Lee Royce, visibly injured and in pain, arrives in Hebden Bridge, seeking refuge after his escape. He procures painkillers and finds a secluded narrow boat, establishing a temporary hideout. Meanwhile, Sergeant Catherine Cawood, still recovering from her own injuries, returns to duty. She delivers devastating news to Nevison Gallagher, revealing that his daughter Ann was not merely kidnapped but brutally raped by Tommy, profoundly impacting Nevison. The investigation into Tommy's whereabouts gains a critical lead when police discover the decomposed bodies of Lewis Whippey and Brett McKendrick in a Sowerby Bridge flat, along with evidence of Tommy's blood, indicating he sustained a serious injury. Tommy, now aware of his exposed location, makes direct contact with his son, Ryan, after school. He preys on Ryan's longing for a father figure, manipulating the boy into secrecy. The act culminates in Catherine's strained birthday celebration, where a drunken Daniel confronts her about past emotional wounds related to his deceased sister, Becky, and Ryan's presence. This painful exchange pushes Catherine into a deep state of despair, highlighting her personal struggles and the profound impact of Tommy's actions on her family. She lashes out at Clare, suggesting she find her own place, marking a significant low point for Catherine.

Act 2

Three weeks later, Catherine returns to work, her physical wounds healing, but her emotional scars remain. She immediately confronts her superiors, Mike Taylor and District Commander Praveen Badal, expressing profound frustration with the perceived lack of progress in the Tommy Lee Royce investigation. Catherine offers specific, actionable leads, but her suggestions are largely dismissed, fueling her disillusionment with the system. Concurrently, Tommy Lee Royce, despite his lingering illness, continues to solidify his manipulative hold over Ryan. Ryan, unaware of Tommy's true dangerous nature, visits the narrow boat, even bringing his friend Cesco, further normalizing the illicit meetings. The criminal underworld continues its violent machinations, as Nevison Gallagher visits Kevin Weatherill in prison, only to be confronted by Kevin's assertion that Nevison's past refusal of a raise directly led to Ann's kidnapping. This encounter adds a layer of moral complexity and personal responsibility to Nevison's suffering. Catherine's professional frustration reaches a breaking point during a trivial police call, leading her to dramatically resign from the force by throwing her epaulets on the floor, a powerful statement of her defiance and despair. The act rapidly escalates when Clare discovers Ryan's secret visits to Tommy from Cesco's mother, triggering an urgent and terrifying crisis that directly sets up the climax.

Act 3

The final act ignites with Catherine's frantic race to the canal, spurred by Clare's revelation that Ryan is with Tommy Lee Royce. Disregarding police protocol and direct orders to await backup, Catherine's singular focus is to save her grandson. She contacts Shaf, urgently requesting armed response and a helicopter, conveying the gravity of the situation and her terrifying suspicion that Tommy has Ryan. Inside the narrow boat, Tommy, now visibly intoxicated and delusional, reveals his sinister plan to Ryan. He douses the boat and Ryan with petrol, intending a murder-suicide, a "different sort of journey." Ryan, terrified, attempts to flee, but Tommy shoves him back, producing a lighter. Catherine, arriving just as Tommy prepares to ignite the fuel, kicks in the boat door. A violent confrontation ensues where Catherine, fueled by adrenaline and a deep-seated rage, disarms Tommy, rescues Ryan, and then brutally assaults him, delivering a series of kicks and stamps reminiscent of his attack on her. Uniformed officers arrive to pull Catherine off Tommy, who is then apprehended and stretchered away, handcuffed and under armed guard. In the aftermath, Catherine receives her epaulets back from Praveen Badal, a tacit acknowledgment that her actions, though extreme, are understood and forgiven. The immediate threat resolved, Catherine seeks a measure of personal peace, reconciling with her son Daniel. She apologizes for past emotional wounds, expresses her love and pride, and acknowledges the impossible choices she faced. The series concludes with Kevin Weatherill's acquittal on blackmail charges, and Catherine standing on the moors, looking across the valley, a profound sense of closure and the possibility of finally moving on with her life.
