Time's Arrow, Part II

Captain Picard and his crew must stop time-traveling aliens from harvesting neural energy in 19th-century San Francisco, while also dealing with the interference of a skeptical Samuel Clemens and ensuring the timeline remains intact to save Data.

Following the events of Part I, the Enterprise crew continues their mission in 19th-century San Francisco to stop the Devidian aliens, who are draining neural energy from humans to survive in their own time. Dr. Beverly Crusher discovers the aliens are masquerading as medical staff at a local infirmary, exploiting a cholera outbreak as cover for their activities.

Meanwhile, Samuel Clemens, convinced that Data and Guinan are up to no good, intensifies his investigation. He steals a device from Data, unaware of its danger. Data and Guinan confront Clemens, but he remains unconvinced of their true intentions.

The crew discovers that the Devidians are using the cavern where Data's head was found as a focal point for their time-traveling activities. Riker, Geordi, Troi, and Beverly investigate the infirmary while Picard and Data gather information about the cavern. The team encounters the alien doctor and nurse. A confrontation ensues, and the aliens escape, but not before Beverly manages to plant sensors that will help track them.

The pursuit leads the crew to the Presidio, where Guinan arranges access to the mines beneath. As they explore the caverns,

Act 1

The narrative opens with Dr. Beverly Crusher in a 19th-century San Francisco morgue, investigating cholera victims. She quickly discerns that the deceased suffered from neural energy depletion, not the epidemic, confirming the Devidian aliens' method of sustenance. The Enterprise crew, disguised in period attire, convenes at a boarding house. They identify Sisters of Hope Infirmary as a likely alien hunting ground due to the high number of victims originating there. Picard strategizes how to identify the shapeshifting aliens, while Geordi works on a detection system. Their clandestine efforts are interrupted by Mrs. Carmichael, their formidable landlady, who demands overdue rent. Picard, improvising, claims they are a traveling Shakespearean troupe, buying them a temporary reprieve. Meanwhile, Samuel Clemens, still suspicious of Data, infiltrates Data's hotel room with the help of a bellboy. Clemens, feigning interest in Data's "engine," surreptitiously removes the transceiver assembly from Data's time-shift device, believing it to be "infernal technology." He hides in a closet as Data and Guinan return, discussing the newly located cavern entrance within the Presidio. Data discovers the missing component and Guinan immediately suspects Clemens. Data reveals the device's toxicity to human tissue. A muffled "thump" from the closet confirms Clemens's presence, leading to his sheepish but defiant discovery by Data and Guinan. This act establishes the immediate threat, the crew's operational challenges, and Clemens's determined, if misguided, interference.

Act 2

Act Two opens with Data retrieving the transceiver assembly from Clemens, who remains defiant, accusing Data and Guinan of a plot. Clemens reveals his extensive investigation into their false identities, exposing their inconsistencies and reaffirming his belief that they are dangerous time travelers intent on disrupting his era. He vows to stop them, exiting in a huff. Concurrently, Riker, Beverly, Troi, and Geordi infiltrate the Sisters of Hope Infirmary. Beverly, posing as a nurse, faces the condescending Dr. Apollinaire, who dismisses her advanced medical suggestions. Troi and Geordi, disguised as charity workers, gather intelligence from patients, learning of a "very bad doctor" and nurse who ignored suffering and frequented the bed of a recently deceased patient. Picard, disguised as a workman, plants a sensor device within a gas lamp. Geordi's VISOR detects residual triolic waves, confirming recent alien activity. The Alien Doctor and Nurse, the aristocratic couple, enter the ward, their ominous presence immediately signaled. Beverly, alerted by the blinking sensor light, attempts to stall them. Riker, Picard, Geordi, and Troi then confront the aliens, who phase out in a flash of blue energy, causing a commotion. Data, in his hotel room, registers the time shift on his device, pinpointing the aliens' new location. A legitimate policeman arrives at the infirmary, questioning the Enterprise crew's presence and Riker's identity. The policeman confiscates the alien's snake-head cane as evidence. Riker, prioritizing the mission, punches the officer, and the crew makes a hasty escape in Data's horse-drawn carriage, which Data has driven to their rescue, evading the converging authorities. This act escalates the conflict, forces the crew into direct confrontation, and highlights the immediate consequences of their interference with the timeline.

Act 3

The Enterprise crew examines the confiscated snake-head cane, which briefly transforms into a writhing ophidian, generating small, unstable time distortions. Data explains the aliens' ability to concentrate these distortions, and Geordi theorizes the cavern where Data's head was found acts as a focusing mechanism. Their discussion is interrupted by Mrs. Carmichael, again demanding rent. Picard orchestrates a theatrical performance of "A Midsummer Night's Dream," casting Mrs. Carmichael as Titania to distract and appease her, successfully buying more time. Meanwhile, the Alien Doctor and Nurse locate the crew's carriage, confirming their presence in San Francisco. Guinan informs Data and Picard that she has secured access to the high-security Presidio mines, the location of the cavern. Picard and Guinan share a poignant "first meeting," with Picard acknowledging their future friendship and the paradox of her not yet knowing him. Samuel Clemens, gathering information from a young reporter, deduces that the "outlaws" are Data and his "accomplices" from the future, interpreting their presence as an "invasion." He resolves to expose them and heads to the Presidio. In the cavern, Geordi confirms its walls are selectively polarized to focus space-time distortions, making it a critical alien transport site. Picard decides to use the ophidian to destroy the alien habitat on Devidia Two, despite Geordi's concerns about phaser compatibility. Clemens then confronts the crew in the cavern, armed with a Colt Forty-Five. The Alien Doctor and Nurse phase in, snatch the cane, and activate it. Data heroically dives for the snake, but the resulting time shift tears his head from his body. Guinan is knocked unconscious, and Clemens's gun and watch are flung away. The Alien Doctor plunges through the time hole, followed by Riker, Geordi, Troi, and Beverly. Picard remains behind to tend to Guinan, now trapped in the 19th century. Clemens, after a moment's hesitation, also leaps through the closing time hole, leaving Picard and Guinan stranded. This act marks the catastrophic midpoint, with Data's apparent demise, Picard's separation from his crew, and Clemens's unexpected journey to the future.

Act 4

Act Four opens with Riker, Beverly, Troi, Geordi, and a disoriented Samuel Clemens materializing on Devidia Two in the 24th century. Clemens, overwhelmed by the futuristic environment, defiantly asserts his right to observe humanity's future, despite Riker's warnings about altering history by his disappearance. Worf contacts the Away Team, revealing they have been missing for nine days. Geordi discovers Data's headless body, still clutching the snake-head cane, and resolves to re-attach Data's head, despite Beverly's skepticism about its five-century age. The group transports to the Enterprise, where Clemens is further astonished by Worf, whom he mistakes for a "werewolf." Riker assigns Troi to escort Clemens, hoping to smooth over the situation. Meanwhile, in the 19th-century cavern, Picard tends to a severely injured Guinan, who is slowly regaining consciousness. They share a profound, paradoxical conversation about their future friendship, with Picard acknowledging that for him, their deep bond has not yet occurred. Guinan spots Data's severed head, and Picard somberly accepts it as "history fulfilling itself." Back on the Enterprise, Guinan, in Ten Forward, refuses to provide Riker with details of the cavern events, emphasizing that revealing information would unduly influence his crucial decisions regarding Picard. Riker, frustrated but understanding, exits. Troi gives Clemens a tour of the Enterprise, during which he initially expresses cynicism about the future, perceiving technology as eroding simple pleasures and the Federation as a military empire. Troi eloquently counters his prejudices, revealing a future free of poverty, despair, cruelty, and war. Clemens's perspective gradually shifts, recognizing the profound societal advancements. In the Medical Lab, Geordi's attempts to reactivate Data are unsuccessful. Clemens, observing the lifeless android, expresses remorse for his earlier misjudgment of Data and the future. Simultaneously, in the 19th-century cavern, the injured Alien Nurse briefly re-phases into existence. Picard attempts to communicate with her, learning a critical, ominous warning: destroying their transport site with current Starfleet weapons will "amplify the time distortion" and "annihilate your own world." The nurse then phases out, leaving Picard with a devastating dilemma. This act deepens character understanding, particularly for Clemens, and introduces a critical, life-threatening complication for the mission.

Act 5

Act Five opens with Riker, under pressure to act, preparing to return to the 19th century for Picard, despite Worf's logical argument to prioritize the mission and destroy the alien habitat immediately. Troi reluctantly supports Worf's position, forcing Riker to order photon torpedoes prepared. Simultaneously, in the Medical Lab, Geordi struggles to reactivate Data. A diagnostic reveals intermittent contact in the input polarizers caused by a tiny iron filing. In the 19th-century cavern, Picard, examining Data's severed head, has an epiphany. He finds a flat-head nail and meticulously uses it to remove the iron filing from Data's head, mirroring Geordi's discovery. On the Bridge, Worf confirms the torpedoes are ready to fire. Back in the Medical Lab, with the obstruction removed, Geordi successfully reactivates Data. Data immediately begins processing a binary message from Picard, warning against firing the torpedoes due to the risk of catastrophic temporal effects. Geordi relays this urgent message to Riker, who halts the firing sequence. Data explains they must re-phase the explosion into the aliens' time continuum to safely destroy their habitat, a modification Geordi estimates will take a couple of hours. This delay provides Riker a window to rescue Picard. Beverly informs Riker that the temporal rift will only be stable enough for one person to return. Overhearing this, Samuel Clemens, profoundly changed by his glimpse of the future, volunteers to remain in the 19th century, allowing Picard to return. He expresses gratitude to Data for opening his eyes and inspiring him to write more books. In the 19th-century cavern, Clemens unexpectedly returns, surprising Picard. He delivers instructions from Geordi on how to activate the ophidian. Picard and Guinan share poignant goodbyes, with Guinan looking forward to their future reunion. On the Bridge, Data detects massive triolic wave activity but no human life signs, leading Riker to believe it's the aliens and order the torpedoes fired. As the torpedoes launch, Data detects a temporal distortion and human life signs, confirming Picard's presence. On the planet surface, Picard is caught in the resulting explosion, which briefly reveals the aliens' phased world. O'Brien beams Picard aboard just as the explosion intensifies, ensuring his safe return. Worf confirms the target's destruction and the cessation of triolic activity. The Enterprise then warps away. In Ten Forward, Picard and Guinan share a silent, meaningful reunion, their shared experience unspoken but deeply felt. Picard's log confirms the timeline is restored, Data is whole, and Clemens will fulfill his literary destiny. In the 19th-century cavern, Clemens ensures Guinan receives medical attention. He finds his watch, but understanding the need to preserve history, he leaves it behind, along with Data's head, to be discovered centuries later. This act resolves the immediate crisis, restores the timeline, and brings the character arcs to a satisfying conclusion.
